Looking for a good first precision rifle

I have an RPR in 223 and 308 and I like the 223 best. It feeds rounds with OAL of 2.5 inches instead of factory at 2.25 inches and that leaves more space for powder without pressure. I hit 2800 FPS with 80 grain SMKs and its mostly around 1/2 MOA. This more than any other reason is why I recommend the RPR and in 223. So you get a light recoiling factory class PRS rifle for a reasonable price.

Any other caliber the RPR comes in must stand it's ground against Tikka which is much smoother to cycle and is a clear advantage for PRS.

Have an rpr in 6.5cm and its great. Action when you first get it feels like a xylophone but it a very easy job to hand lap the bolt body and the cocking cams, buttery smooth after that. Muzzle device works well out of the box and once you get the stock properly adjusted its good.
Once you lap the action and oil it its really slick.
Keep in mind all tikka actions are long actions though they might shorten the stroke.

The slot on the left side of the RPR bolt is full of tooling chatter and grabs the bolt release lever when the bolt over rotates in the un-even bolt handle slot. If you polish the slot on the left side of the bolt with a stone you can improve this significantly, but the root problem is how the bolt handle slot is not the same size and in the same relative position between the receiver and the two components that share the bolt handle slot.

I would like to find a gunsmith who speacializes in correcting the bolt slot and mills a fresh and uniform chanel and adjusts the bolt handle to fit the dimensionally corrected bolt handle raceway.

My savage stealth is a tack driver, butt stock does suck, but easy barrel changes and smooth bolt for 400 less than the ruger. Can get the evolution with the magpul butstock and will be a winner

RPR in .308 for around $1500 new is a sweet deal. Throw a scope on and you're good to go. Mine loves Federal Gold Match and shoots close to 1/2 moa all day long.

Pros
- cheap mags and many options
- ready to go out of the box. No need to upgrade stock, rail, etc
- if you want to upgrade it is very easy. Compatible with most AR parts
- sub MOA rifle from what I have seen for most people

Cons
- bolt channel is not as smooth like others have mentioned. But I never really noticed it while shooting. Mine after a few hundred rounds seems to have smoothen up nicely

I bought a stealth 10/110 ba in .308 this rifle is far more capable than I am. If you like the tactical look this should satisfy your needs. Price is not ridiculous but the performance is.

Even though op already went with the HCR here is another vote for the Tikka T3X CTR.

That being said I have a lot of money tied up into this built.

New shooter here,

I bought all the milsurps I wanted and now would like to buy one precision rifle get into longer range shooting.

Idealy in .308 for ammo commonality.

I was looking at the howa hcr and the tikka t3x. I have to confess I like how they also have a tacticool look.

Any other suggestions or recommendation?

without the tactical look, a t3x varmint will do it perfectly.

I got a second one cuz moar guns = better

Was on the fence between a Sako TRG or SSG 3000 , finaly got a really sweet SSG with GRS stock.

Cabelas has a very nice special edition of the T3x that has a set trigger AND a muzzle brake. Comes in 308 or 6.5creed. They also have a few RPR's, and a bunch of nice Savage rifles. Id be looking at that special edition Tikka if I was starting out!
