I am looking for the right Rifle to learn good basic shooting skills. So in the future i can become more proficient with the larger- calibers and longer distance shooting.

First i was thinking what type of uses i would be using this Rifle for, probably 90% Range and 10% Hunting (Northern British Columbia)

So i was thinking the TRG-22 obviously in the 308win. What type of shooting/distances could i use this Rifle for. It seems most tactical rifles are chambered in 308win, why? also if in the future i wanted to go bigger is their any options to rechamber a 308 to accept a bigger round?

In past i have shot 300rum, black/green rifels, lots of handguns .22 - 44mag so i can handle the extra weight and recoil of a larger round should i start with something bigger then a 308win maybe a 338mag?

Start with a quality 22LR like a Bruno/CZ or CIL/anschutz. Burn up thousands of dirt cheap Fed HP or whatever you can get from local stores.

this will teach you alot about all aspects of shooting. Shoot from position, off a bipod, off a bench. Shoot as you want to hunt/play.

Once you have learnt how to shoot, get yourself a fast twist 223 and you can enter the world of reloading and centerfire. With 75gr Amax, you can practise as you would a 308 with 1/3 the recoil and 1/2 the cost. Trigger time is everytime.

From there, the world is your oyster and you will have a very good idea of what you actually need/want.

Mysticplayer's advice is right on the mark.

Whatever you do don't start with a magnum or you will likely develope a flinch and in any case, you won't shoot it enough to get proficient.

After 40 years of shooting one other recommendation is when you buy, shop carefully and buy quality. If I was starting over I would buy fewer but better and keep them instead of turning them over.

Good advice so far, start small but not cheap, 40 yrs experience shooting 22lr has taught me a lot about windage, leading elevation etc, get something that you can afford to shoot a lot, then get something with a bit more punch and learn how to reload so you can tweak em and get the most out of your weapons, by quality and keep them, thats my 2 cents

TRG starter rifle is like using a Dodge Viper to learn how to drive.

Why not pick up a Savage HB amd a nice scope and try some shooting like said above?

If you like it, go for the TRG then!

is this based on price or ease of use?
Both. They are great rifles to start out with for long range shooting. I am looking at the Savage myself, great trigger, stock, bbl etc. You can shoot much more .233 to pratice long range shooting, than you can with .308. Start out with a good gun, and a great scope. If you are stuck on the .308, save your money on the TRG, and get the Savage HP Presicion in .308. Great rifle, WAY less money than the TRG. Put the money you saved on the TRG into a great scope, and ammo!Cheers!:D

I agree that the .308 in a Remington or Savage is the way to go. Accurate, relatively cheap to reload and lots of aftermarket accessories.
...And plenty of hunting ammo if it's your thing.
