I have a Sako L691 action that was originally a 300 Win Mag. I want to build another rifle so I'm looking for a good magnum wildcat calibre. Any thoughts on the possibilities?

I built a 30-338 i am happy with it , if you stoke er up it will shoot faster than most 300 weatherby's but with so many of the newer magnums out now if you ar looking for speed it just don't keep up :) , i am just building a 6.5-284 on a pre 64 action but i imagine you have a magnum bolt face so need to stick with the magnum size head or change the bolt .
So many good wildcats out there but also so many good factory cartridges now.....

Boss, there are no free lunches. If you want more velocity you either have to burn a larger quantity of slower powder, or you need to increase the pressures.

For instance, Win_070, with his .30-338/.308 Norma Mag, though he has less powder capacity, he claims higher velocities than the .300 Wea. that has to mean either the Weatherby case is underloaded, or his load produces more chamber pressure. There are no free lunches.

What do you envision your wildcat doing? Bearing in mind the .300WM has won lots of 1000 yard competions and slaughter lots of game.

I have played around with alot of wildcats, some are great some no so.
Agree with Splatter, its hard to beat something like the 300 win, but there also is something to be said in the making of something different. More info on what you are wanting to do would be helpful,in sharing experiences with you.

To be honest.....

I just like building them, I already have a 30-30 AI, 6.5 x 55 , 303 Epps, 30-06 and a 280 AI . So I don't really need to fill a hole in my locker. I was considering the 30-338 actually, but is there much difference between it and the 30-338?

In reality this rifle would sit in my locker and see action at the range a few times a year, But I still gotta build it!

6.5 x 300 Weatherby with a 28 inch barrel. I have made a few of these. Fast, flat and not too much recoil.

A 30-338 is the same as a .308 Norma Mag. in performance.... not much different than your .300 Win

why not go to a big bore?....I've had a 375 Weatherby and have a 416 blank here now,..and a 416 Taylor reamer ordered.
I think "why not" had a Sako 375 barrel for sale a while back. That would be an easy switch, and you could get it rechambered to the 375 Weatherby while you're at it. This is an uncommon cartridge that you don't see often...you just have to get used to explaining to guys that it's NOT a 378 Weatherby...but a 375:)

I've got a stainless Douglas .375 Ackly barrel with Sako AV thread doing nothing. Don't know if threads would be the same but it's one cool round.

Boss Hogg, just reviewing your calibre list and you have the mid cals pretty much covered. What I don't see is a hair back loudenboomer or a shoulder breaker so...

Consider a 25WSM, 25-7RM, 6mm RSAUM, 243WSSM IMP for a flat shooter. For a boomer, I would look at any of the WSM's in 33 or 35 or 375. The next logical group would be the Dakotas or a big bore based on the RM/WM case.

If single feeding, how about the 6.5 STW or a 35 RUM? Hey, how about building wildcats on the 375Steyr case. A bunch have already been done but that would be an obsure case to work on.

Hard to come up with wildcats nowadays as there are so many factory cartridges that already fill the slots. Visit the Clymer or MidwayUSA site. They both list lots of different wildcats and something might just suit your fancy.

The wildcats you list, would they all work with my 300 WM bolt face? I have to admit I'm not familiar with those that you mentioned. The 243 WSSM IMP sounds interesting.

Your magnum bolt face will require a case of roughly 0.532". In other words, the same size as the 300 Win mag etc. This also includes the WSM's, WSSM's, RSAUM's, and RUM's (ok, with a little work), so it really allows you quite a varied choice. Jerry's new 7mm wildcat sounds pretty cool, but you need an -06 bolt face for that, so go a little larger. How about an 8mm RUM Improved? - dan

Hmmm.....

So many options so few actions.

Okay, so I think I have a couple picked out. I need a rifle that will throw a big chunk of lead. Now all I'll ever hunt with it of course is Moose or Elk, maybe one day Mr. Wagner will take me out for Caribou but that another thread.

So my choices are either the 35-300 Win Mag or the 30-338.

Anybody have any arguments against either pick or a better one to offer up?

No need to stay with the shorter .300 Win case, your action will handle the .340 Weatherby - not a wildcat but one of the best performers in a 26 inch barrel there is. Very accurate and inexpensive to build and buy components for. No special dies nor reamer needed. Better choice of bullets over the .35.

If you want a "big" chunk of lead then a .30 cal simply will not do!

Boss Hogg, all those wildcats will work with the magnum bolt face. That was how they were designed. I would hold off on any WSSM stuff as the rumor mill has it that the WSSM is heading for the cemetary.

Of the final two you mention, I would go with the 35-300WM. The 30-338 is way too close to the 300WM to worry about the huge costs.

Will it do anything differently from the 30 or 338 on large grass eaters? Probably not but that is most certainly not the point.

As Guntech said, the 340Wby is now common fare but work it most certainly does. 225 to 250gr bullets put a big hurt at both ends.

On that note, there would be the 338STW, 35STW, 375STW, 404STW, 410SomethingorOther, 45Lott....
