Hello all I've been looking for A German Shorthaired Pointer. Any one know of a great hunting dog out there looking for a home. I would prefer a darker male under the age of 2 that can Hunt. Did I mention it has to hunt? I am in Vancouver please call or write with any leads, Gus 604-612-9149 or gus@theroyal.ca

if you have a chapters near by go into the magazine section and look for a magizine called "the CKC Dogs annual" in it you will find all ther breeders listed by breed registered with the CKC. there are a few GSP breeders in the lower mainland and van isle. if you find one* a breeder and want info on thier background shoot me a PM

Thanks for the replys. I know of all the breeders and all the rescue's across Canada. I was just hoping for a "friend of a friend" type hook up. I really want a started dog over 6 months but under 2 years. I just found a dog today in Idaho! Its 8 months and has had quite a bit of training. I'm driving down tomorrow to take a look. 10 hours ouch.

My uncle imported an excellent AKC ##### from Maryland last year and threw a litter sired by his excellent male Ajax. These dogs see a TON of birds because Claude runs a big pheasant preserve in New Brunswick. I have seen the pups from the 1st litter and they are EXCELLENT tempered, very even keel and calm, which to me as an owner and trainer of two GSP's is the key to ending up with a great field companion. If I had room for one in my kennel right now I would have one.
I realize it is a long way from BC, and I have no idea whether any dogs are available. Just thought I would provide the info. Good luck!

How do I post a picture of my new dog? Found him in Idaho 8 months old and hunting already.

I'm in F'ton area as well. Claude is in the Riverside-Albert area near Fundy Park. He has about 400 acres of huntable terrain and is the supplier of birds for pretty well all of the smaller preserves in NB. Very challenging hunting, you earn your birds with boot leather as these birds have lots of places to run to. Very scenic, and great food. I can hook you up with a brochure or better yet, when I go down this fall for a hunt you can car-pool with me:p

PM me if you want more info.:)

Waggus... Contact the breed warden off the linky below... IF you want GSP as a hunting dog, go with the GERMAN bred dog. It is referred to as a "kurzhaar", pronounced "kut-zar". Which means short hair. Personally, I'm a fan of the DD, they have longer hair... On the link I provided, read about the standards to which THESE dogs are held, they put to shame the backyard breeding most of us North Americans are accustomed to!!!

Cheers

Oh, now I'm insulted:p My shorthairs can hunt and have desire and energy. They're not DK's but were bred here in Alberta......oh wait, they also have strong ties to German Bloodlines.

Some of the US bred dogs for field trials have heavy German bloodlines. Although they've been selectively bred for hunting and have great drive, some breeders forget about the looks and have some fugly dogs. Whatever floats your boat I guess.

Great hunting bloodlines don't mean anything though if you don't train your dog properly and early. Get working with that pup, he's really nice looking!

sorry but for this whole thread when ever I hear GSP I keep thinking Georges St. Pierre... lol. Mite have a hard time keeping him as a pet but hed probably be a good hunter. :shotgun:

Nice looking dog Waggus.

Thanks, I am familiar with the DK's. My dog is from No-Mars Kennels in Caldwell Idaho. I found, in Vancouver anyway, a lot of dogs were being bred for show rather than hunting and field performance. Caldwell was closer, than Alberta and points East, to drive to. I wanted to meet the dog in person. His pedigree is from strong German lines. He is even black and white rather than Liver and white of the akc GSP breed standard. I believe a lot of the DK's are still black. No matter, he's a part of our family now, the kids love him and even if he doesn't hunt I gots ta keep him.
Thanks Again

Nice looking dog Waggus!

And jjackman, I agree, some kennels do produce good dogs... But in my humble opinion, Racehorses are Racehorses... With the North American attitude regarding breeding and the LACK of controls on it... You really can't be sure just who's been sneeking what into the "woodpile"...

I'll stick with the German DD and DK's strict breeding.

Cheers
Jay
