As the title says, I'm looking for a good gunsmith that can build a nice 300 win mag heavy barrel rifle.

Any suggestions?

Your profile does not indicate where you are...

There are many good smiths who can put together a fine rifle for you.

I do not supply actions/stocks/etc.

I do all the labour however and I have a good .300 Win Mag reamer.

Using a Remington 700 Magnum action will be the cheapest way to start...

Sorry forgot to add that stuff, been a member for ages, but finally had time to start doing things again.

The biggest dillema I had was I was going to start with a PH 1200 and switch to a heavier and more precise barrel.

Want to stick with the bolt action.

I am reading alot about using a Rem700 as a base gun.

Money isn't a major issue, neither is time, as long as I get the results I want.

I'm looking for something that will be accurate to 800m, and have stopping power for larger game.

Do you have a PH1200 already. I have a PH 1200 Mag that I am useing to hit 600 yards now and think it would reach out to 800. I am a big fan of PH I have 6 now and am still collecting and building. As for suggestions DH Henery is a good smith in he is in bentley.

I would recommend

Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply out of calgary, he does all my work, and long range heavy bbl stuff in large calibers is definatly his forte......

I have a buddy who uses guntech.......I personally have not, but have heard good things about his work, and my buddies stuff is top notch.....

My rebarrels have been done with Guntech. Good stuff.

If you need a barrel or other accessories, I will be able to help you with some parts.

More then ample to push 208 Amax and 210gr Bergers VLDs at 3000fps which is deadly at the distances you want.

Belted magnums do require some attention to the reamer used. Talk to GT about his reamer. The 7RM's he has done for me and my friend had a very well thought out reamer design. That lead to awesome performance and very long brass life.

There are no shortage of shooters who have had wonderful success with the Rem700. They do require some prep for best performance which is no issue for a precision smith with the right mandrels.

I lean heavily towards to the Savage/Stevens line. Never bothered doing any prep work to the actions and they work wonderfully.

The PH1200 I assume is a variant of the Mauser. Great field action and can be made to be very accurate. Again, talk to the smith you wish to build for advice on the quirks on Mausers.

With the right prep work and barrel, there is little issue with shooting 1/2min and under at 800m with a Mauser. Most of us use Rems and Savages cause they are so much easier to make work.

Enjoy your build....

Jerry

heh, thanks for the suggestions so far.

Longshot: nice...

I got a lot of things to consider, and a few gunsmiths to contact.

Consider guntech heavily, even if he's not accepting work currently, he's worth waiting for. Have had two custom/wildcat LR builds done by Dennis now, and the first was the most accurate rifle I've ever fired, the second's in the safe awaiting test firing... His rates are very reasonable as well.

With regard to actions most lean toward the blue printed 700’s or plain Savage/Stevens. Choose either and you will be satisfied. With regards to barrels choose the best you can afford; better to spend too much rather than too little! Pillar bed the action as a guarantee of accuracy and get references on the smith you use to put it all together. Lots of people call themselves gunsmiths, you need a specialist and those (good ones at least) are not very common. More than anything else, the mating of the parts will determine the level of accuracy of the finished product. Also, “Tube Guns” seem to be the latest idea in stocking precision firearms, you might want to look into that.

My $0.02, Good Luck, I hope it works out well!

I would recomend Mick Mcphee from Kamloops. In addition of him being target gunsmith with reputation second to none, knowing him very well, he also makes his own winning .30 cal barrels with machine he rebuild from ground up. Regards; Roman.
