Hi all,

a friend has asked for help in selecting a LH hunting rifle in .308 or similar caliber. She is petite, so size/weight is going to be an issue. Her budget is under $1,000. I know nothing about left handed guns and their availability, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

When looking for a rifle for a small woman, the tendency is to search for something short and light, which might end up being a handful for the gal if the chambering leans towards a cartridge that bucks a bit. One rifle that should be considered is a Tikka T-3 Hunter with a wood stock in 6.5X55. The cartridge is accurate, mild mannered, yet capable for game up to 1000 pounds. The wood stock can be easily cut to fit the shooter, and a good recoil pad can be installed without the additional work that is involved with a hollow plastic stock. I think the Tikka is the only rifle that combines the attributes of affordability, quality, with such a wide selection of chambering options, in a left hand action.

Most of the other left hand bolt guns that I'd be tempted to recommend exceed the $1000 budget by a considerable margin, and the Tikka will certainly use all of it. There are low cost options such as the Savage, and Ruger American lines, but they aren't rifles that I'm inclined to recommend.

take a hard look at the Browning Micro Hunter X-bolt, she'll love it forever! Also consider the 7mm-08 as first choice.

I can't warm up to Browning's bolt. Its slick, has the stylish 60 degree bolt lift, and all, but its a complicated thing to work on. IMHO, stripping a bolt should be an easy, straight forward process, involving a minimum of tools. That leaves the Browning out.
