For casual target/plinking, If you have a few 9mms and are wanting to pick up a semi auto in a calibre that is gonna have noticably more punch would 40 suffice or would you be better off stepping up to 45 ?
Keep in mind that I would be only using factory ammo.
Not interested in hearing about 38/357 44etc.

I dont own a 40 but I've shot them. Recoil is a little sharper slap than a 9mm. 45 is a little more of a push than a slap, less sharp but a bit more of it.

I'm gonna say there's no right answer to your question - do some reading and make your choice, you won't be wrong either way. I strongly prefer .45, as I have a great affinity for 1911's.

What do you mean by more "punch"? If its just for plinking etc then why spend more money on ammo?

If you just want a gun with more recoil/louder, yeah get the .45

The primary reason for using a .45 over a 9mm is stopping power (self defense). Having shot 9mms and .40s they pretty much feel the same to me, i wouldnt feel the need to buy a .40 cal in addition to a 9mm. the .45 does feel a bit more powerful.

The way I see it, have a 9mm for plinking most of the time, ammo is cheap. Have a 45 for occasional big bore fun, ammo is of course more expensive, but it WILL put a smile on your face. I would skip the 40, nothing against the round itself, but cost wise, price of 40 ammo is closer to 45 than 9mm. My 2 cents!

.40 seems to be a good choice. It also depends on the make and model of the handguns that interest you. For example, .357 Magnum might be a good choice if you wanted to go with a revolver.

I'm happy with the following combination...
.22lr converstion kit for my 9mm Glock, .45ACP 1911 & Glock21, and 44mag revolver.
I let new shooters shoot the cheap stuff and save the big-bore for myself;)

i shoot 45 just for the POW factor.for me its a very accurate caliber..
slower bullet = less muzzle flip=faster sight aquisition ..POW factor =$$ (keep that in mind)
