looking for a little more bang than 9mm...?

I have a 9mm and 45acp in a steel 1911. The 45 feels like I am firing the 9mm but with MFS 115grs. It's so hard to describe the difference, but it is noticeable. I don't feel like I could plink away with a 45 and factory ammo. 9mm factory is about as far as I would go for plinking.

Reloads open your world to a whole new realm though. Don't rule it out.

I think it does provide diversity. Like others have said there is noticably more of a snap with the .40 over the 9mm. I shot .40 and 9mm this weekend and noticed the differance right away.
