I presently looking for a Marlin 30/30 after much research. I have decided this is hunting rifle best for me. I am an old school hunter always used lever actions and do like bolt actions but the 30/30 lever I just love for hunting and protection fishing. My eyes are 50 yrs old and the stock sights are just not going to work for me. I will not scope a Marlin lever action.
What suggestions does anyone have for me?
All suggestions would be appreciated
Thank You

lol on the protection but have been experiencing many bears where I fish/camp in tents. Had one drive me out of my camp this summer I middle if the night. Had to run to boat and wait for him to leave at daylight.

Second on the Skinner. I use both the winged and express sights and love how solid they feel and the style completes the rifles.

Same old eyes as you and having a hard time lining up that super blurry buckhorn rear sight. Getting old sucks! I just ordered a set of Skinner sights for my Marlin. They should be in later this week or early next week.

I also possess those tired "older" eyes, and have problems with most open sight designs.

However, I mounted a Williams Foolproof on the rear of my M94 Winchester 38-55, and a firesight up front.
With this combination, I have shot some very nice groups at 100, and I have also successfully hunted with it.

I am quite pleased with this setup, and if the light is poorer, I simply screw the smaller aperture out of the Williams and
use the larger opening, which works great in lower light conditions.
Regards, Dave.

Dave nails it. ^^

Thank for your input everyone. I decided to go with the Skinner Alaskan. I will be putting the higher front sight on over the holidays and hope it is nice enough out to go sight it in.

I was in the same spot with not wanting to scope my marlins but I finally was able to try one of the leupold scout scopes on my sbl and I love it. Only 2.5 magnification so you can still have both eyes open and target aquisition is really fast.

I upgraded to Williams WGRS sights for my Marlin 336.
I had a hard time holding 7rnds on target at 100yrds with the stock sights.

Holding a 4-6" group off hand is more the norm with the Williams sights.

I prefer the WGRS because they are compact. And don't hang down the side.

Also : see my add for a new production Marlin 336w 30-30 on the EE

My levers are mounted with Williams or Lyman receiver sight. I choose the screw adjust over the knobs but a recent Win 94 32 Special Lyman with knobs has me rethinking. These styles dial in incredibly for sighting. My WGRS peep is great for set and forget but the precision screw adjust feature is well worth the choice of receiver sights mounted on the side of the receiver imo.
