It depends on what you want to use the rifle and scope for. For example if you want it on a rifle for benchrest shooting it is very different for a rifle for more general use, also how big and heavy should the combined weight be. On the rimfire rifles that I have I try to keep the size and weight of the scope both compact and light. I like both Leupold and Sightron rimfire scopes..
Save yourself some money and get the Bushnell 3-9x40 illuminated rimfire scope. This one blows away anything for under $400. The glass is great, adjustments are tactile and the BDC reticle is perfect for rimfire shooting. Calgary Shooting Centre has them.
a realy great rimfire scope for cheap would be a nikon pr31 4-12x40 one inch tube all you will ever need in a rimfire unless you want to go crazy then you need the expensive scopes.....
