Looking for a mountain rifle

I have a t3 lite in 7mm mag and it is a nice light gun. I also have a 257 wby mag vanguard and 7mm wby mag mark v. They also are not heavy. Im assuming you shoot a long way out in the mountains (Ive never shot in the mountains).
Tikka T3 Lite/stainless, Talley rings, and ultra-light Leupold scope - 6.85-ish lbs, scope and all, and about $1200. For less than the $300 still left in the budget, a gunsmith can shave the extra .35 lbs (and then some) off the gun for you; a Tikka has a fairly heavy barrel, lots of meat could come off of it.

Caliber - 308 Winchester; common, affordable, comfortable, available, will not be as deafening or suffer as much velocity loss as a magnum after the smith shortens the barrel a couple of inches as noted above, and when suitably loaded for the game in question - if a 308 Winchester ain't 'enough gun', then you probably need something more like a 375 anyway.

Rem 700's ain't bad either, but it just bothers me to no end to have to buy a gun and then spend a pile of money on it to get what you really wanted in the first place.

How about what I use, a Remington Model 7 stainless synthetic in 7mm SAUM. Talley lightweight rings, Leupold Ultralight scope. Does not weight much and shoots 140 grain Barnes TSX's at 3100fps with excellent accuracy. Also shoots Nosler 160 grain partitions nicely.

Word on the breeze whispers of a 338 Federal Montana coming this way soon. I am eager to see how it compares, hopefully like that 7-08!

Wow, it comes in an ounce lighter than the 7mm08....guess cause of the bigger hole! Should be a winner for guys that like a little bigger calibre sheep rifle in grizz country.

5 pounds 1 ounce......man that does sound enticing!

Husky 7x57, 4100 lightweight hands down your best bet unless your hunting Grizz. Ignore the "slowtwist" post , don't know where that's coming from. 140 gr. up to 175 factory will be fine . Just depends on where and what your hunting. The only problem you'll have is trying to find one . And if you do getting them to part with it . Good luck.

Just so you know, coldsmoke, all Husqvarna 4000/4100 factory 7X57 barrels are 1:12 twist. I have owned five of them over the years, still have two, and none will stabilize 160 gr and heavier spitzer bullets. They barely stabilize 154 gr boatails, and that only when leaning hard on the loads.

You're right about finding them. :)

I parted with my Husky Featherweight because of the slow twist....it wouldn't stabilize anything heavier than 140 gr.....and I tried nearly every 7mm bullet made.
It was also heavier than my BRNO 22F, a 700 Ti, 700 Mtn rifle, a 270 Parker Hale and an M65 Tikka carbine.
Best grouping bullet in it was a 120 gr with 140 being a close second, but 160 gr. and heavier would actually keyhole.

Have used the lightweight one for 10 plus years and have never had a problem with factory loads , again 140gr. and up through 175. So possibly you have issues with the integrity of your barrel, which seems unlikely. I don't know.

What factory spitzer loads have you used that weigh more than 150 gr?

Ted

Norma 7x57 Mauser. On a side note , I do realize they have a one-twelve twist but again never had any problems with a heavier load. If anything, actually became more stable with weight. Go figure. By the way , how did you ever find 5 Husky 7x57 featherweights ? There were less than 2000 made and that was 50 years ago.

Probabaly because the heavier loads are round nose.

Started collecting them more than forty years ago.

I find it odd that you guys seem to be totally discounting what brotherjack said about the Kimber Montana. I can attest to everything that he said about that particular rifle. When he first got it, I was as jealous as heck; I thought to myself "If they ever make one in 30-06, I'll sell both of the 30-06's that I currently own to get one." It was beautiful to handle, it had a Winchester-style 3 position safety, a blind-box magazine, and it came in stainless; I thought that it would be the perfect hunting rifle. Then I saw the serious problems that he was having with it; problems that even a manufacturer of inexpensive rifles would be embarrassed to have occur on their rifles. Worst of all, Kimber doesn't back their rifles in Canada.
Buy one if you like, But I for one would consider it foolish to not take head of others warnings.

Much better than his 375 Wooger for sure!

Recoil is not bad at all, I think he did alright with this one. Talley mediums from Mr. Bartel and a 3-9 Lightweight Leupold and he is in fine shape to take a ram.

At least with that heavy pig of a rifle I could keep up with him. Maybe I'll get him to carry my pack now.

Buy some protien powder and 40lb dumbbells. Incorporate these into training program. If you can't hump anything under 10lbs including scope around, You da girlie mahn!!!! All this lightweight talk is nonsense.
