I've slowly been saving my pennies this summer and am almost ready to purchase a new pistol. I've checked out a few glocks and s&w mps, 1911s and an XD 45. All of which are sweet little pistols, that I strangely have no interest in owing.

So with finally making that realization I became lost in the search for the pistol I want to purchase. Keep in my mind its a very large purchase for me as I won't be able to afford another for at least the next year or so and I really have to treat this as large deal.

I've been looking at a few brands and leaning towards a steel pistol, but would go with a polymer in a quality piece. My main criteria is reliability. I've had a few unreliable autos in the past (haven't we all) and really have no patience for getting them to run anymore. Out of the box reliability and quality are mybuying point.

I've been looking at a fairly wide price range, but would like to keep it under $1000 used, so far I' interested in the Beretta 92FS-M9, Sig 220 Combat .45, HK P2000, CZ Shadow or Cz Duty and Sig 226-228. I'm also leaning towards a .45 but if I find a nice 9mm I'd be willing to shift towards that. Thanks all I appreciate everyone's input.

Wait a little longer, there will be Shadow coming out next year with short dust cover.
75SA is a very solid piece if you don't mind SA duns, but it'd require some smithing to improve trigger (to be excellent) and factory sights are not my cup of tea as I like target sights, otherwise it's a very nice pistol. That's for 9mm.
See if you can locate XDm, they come in .45 and I like those too.

I love my two 1911 .45's, nothing can compare to the chaos of dumping $10 of ammo in under 3 seconds... but they don't get as much range time as my Beretta M9 just because it is way more affordable. If it is accuracy you want "In my opinion" the CZ Shadow would be the best bet. The XDm 9mm is a very accurate gun as well.

I'm pretty happy with my CZ 75B. Browning Hi Powers are also well worth considering.

If you want to go .45, the HK45 is one of the best out of the box .45 pistols on the market, although they're a bit over of your budget. You might want to take another look at the M&P 45, as they also have a very good reputation and are considerably less expensive than an HK.

Will you be reloading or shooting factory ammo? You would be far better served by 9mm if you are dependent on factory ammo, given the substantial cost difference. .45 ACP is fast becoming a reloader's cartridge, much like .45 Colt, 10mm, or .44 Special/Magnum.

A reliable, high-quality, under $1000., pistol FOR WHAT?

This is kind of like going to the Snap-On guy and telling him that you'd like to buy some-kind-of a nice tool.

Firearms are specialized tools. Define your ambition.

The right pistol will be obvious (to us, at least).

At the moment I only handload for rifle but getting into 45ACP is as easy as picking up the dies and projectiles. I have a ton of brass I've scavenced from my range.

btw The HK45 is out of my budget (i googled) but it is a very sweet looking pistol.

cz, underated, well built very accurate, priced in your range. If you want polymer that is very well built and reliable styer M9-A1 excellent piece.

Actually, the newly produced CZs come better finished and seem to use better quality parts as well, not that I broke anything on my older CZs. (except for FO rod fell out once during a match).
