I am looking for a new bullet to try out for deer and bear with my .300 sav. right now I am shooting 150gr N/P and they are working great but I would like a tad bit more accuracy.

I was thinking about the new 165gr accubond
or maybe some silvertips.

I know some will say all you need is your regular soft point for the .300 sav velocities but without getting into any lengthy bullet failure discussions, I don't feel confident using them with my past experiences on game.

any suggestions?

Lefty ####,
I was sure that I had read something about nosler coming out with a .308 165gr Accubond this year so when I read your reply I looked over at the Nosler form and there is a 165gr .308 Accubond that has or is coming out for 2006. Here is a link

How does the interbonds expand at the 2400 to 2500fps range?
any experience with them?

if you want accuracy try swift scirrocos. ausome bullet and swift says they will expand at low velocitys a good thing in 300 savage. two animals down and no recovered bullet. very accurate too.

Nosler has announced on their forum site that the 165 30 calibre Accubond will be in stores shortly.

With that said I love the 180 Hornady SP in the .300 Savage. The velocity is modest enough a premium bullet like the Partition is not needed.

I know I know I know, you don't need Premium bullets for .300 savage velocities:rolleyes:

I have had 2 bad experiences with Federal factoy ammo and since then I would rather spend a little more money and load some premium bullets that will expand reliably everytime at the .300 savage velocities then shoot factory soft points that I don't have confidence in.

I also find reloading really fun and why not try different bullets out as long as they are not acting like a FMJ on game!

Partitions will expand reliably down to 1800 fps
and the Accubond's minimum expansion is 1600 fps

both these bullets will expand reliably out to 300 yards for a 150 -165gr bullet
with .300 savage velocities.

I will only shoot at a feeding relaxed deer out to 250 yards max with a solid rest and 99% of my shots are well under 100 yards which makes a premium bullet a little more reassuring.

I am interested in those interolcks though, I think I will give them a try!

Kinda low tech but.... the best groups I've have with my 99 has been 150 gr Speer Hot Cor's with IMR 4064. At medium velocity this bullet/load holds together well and groups around 1.5 ", not bad for an old lever gun. Wouldn't even dream of them in my 06, but that is apples and oranges.

.300 Savage

Bullet length is a major concern in the .300 Savage due to the short OAL for a cartridge to function in the 99 rifle and the modest capacity in this case. I have used 150 grain Hornady bullets for years with excellent accuracy and game taking results on deer and caribou. The 165 grain flat base Hornady should be ok also and I have used the 180 Speer (it worked ok but not a favourite of mine). Many of the new bullets are extremely long compared to the old standards and while they are great in some rounds they don't really fit in this instance. IMHO

I believe that the Nosler Partition is THE preium bullet for this cartridge in the 150 grain weight due to the modest length, easy initial expansion and good penetration for this weight. I've never met a partition that did not shoot well but perhaps I have been lucky. It will certainly give reliable terminal performance and experimenting with bullet seating depth or even trying a different set of dies may show an improvement.

Ken Waters spoke highly of the Speer 165 grain Gland Slam in his pet loads on the .300 due to its short length and good construction. I have never tried it though as the 150 grain Hornady has always done its job.

Reloading is great and trying different components can be fun however I usually strive for one good load for a caliber or rifle to simplify things and then stick with it. To each his own.

Lastly, do you see improved accuracy with your rifle with different bullets? Perhaps the fore end is bearing on the front of the receiver, etc. There was a great article in Rifle magazine by John Barsness last year on loading and shooting the Savage calibers in the great old 99.

I found that the speer BTSP were most accurate out of my 99 and second federal factory ammo. My best group with the Partitions were 1 1/2, 3 shot at 100yards but most were around 2-2 3/4 inches. For the Partitions, I worked up my most accurate load using 41gr of IMR 4895 and for the speer BTSP I used 40.5gr of IMR4895. I like that powder over 4320.

PS, If you have a link to that article, I would love to read it!

Thanks

Tod, I just love your avatars!!!

But on the serious side, would the the Barnes triple shock X actually expand at those velocities? I haven't really looked up any info on these bullets because I always thought they were for dangerous game.

I have a Remington 700 "Classic" chambered in the venerable 300 Savage. I have pretty well settled on the 150 Partition as my go-to bullet. It will shoot under ¾" anytime at 2800 if I do my part and I have shot groups under 1" at 250 yards. I have taken a couple of deer with it, and would not hesitate to plug a moose if he happened to show up inside 300 yards. One might have to ease up slightly in an old 99 Savage, but this would make a great combo for anything that doesn't grow big and bite back. Try Reloder 15 with that 150!! :D Regards, Eagleye.
