Hey I am sure I can get a few opinions here ;) I want to replace my cinder block BSA with a lighter hunting rifle and was wondering what is crap and what is good. I don't want cal. options just the rifle makers and my only preferences are light weight and detachable mag.

The tikka t-3 is quite light, has a detachable mag,and the two that I have fired were very accurate. In fact all tikka rifles must shoot a five shot 1" group before being sold.

Remington makes a few different detachable mag rifles. The mountain rifle being the lightest.

Tikka also makes a good rifle that has a Detachable mag, actually thats all they make. The T3 lite is a nice light rifle

Browning has a system that is almost a detachable mag, the mag box clips on to the floorplate and the whole thing swings up into the action. kind of a cool system.

Savage make detachable mag rifles but I don't like savage so I won't say anymore about them othere than they do shoot well.

Good luck

I looked at the Tikka and diddn't really like how the bolt felt. It may be nothing but I thought it was loose and looked cheap. I want to check out the Savage/accu trig. as well as a Ruger MII ( I am not sure about their mag.). I want to keep costs down as much as possible so sako are out. I am not familliar with the Remington models, are they a decent gun ?

maybe you should look at the tikka t3 again. the bolt is so slick you may think its loose. i own 2 t3's as well as a mix of other brands. the t3 is deadly acurate and comfortable to shoot. my 300wsm groups under an inch with handloads in 150 or 180grn. may do as well with factory amo but i have never tried. its an awsome rifle for the price.

I was going to give it a closer look when I didn't have the kids with me and when I have a couple other rifles narrowed down. I was just reading on the Weatherby Vangaurd and I think that might need a closer look as well.

Browning BLR, best hunting rifle on the planet.

Up to 200 yards or so..........then you do need to get a bolt gun.

I have always liked the BLR and it is on the top of my list..... for a used one. I just came back from wholesale and was able to look at the Vangaurd, T3, and a remington. The T3 was definately the top of those choices, I will have to wait for the savages to get restocked before fondleing them.

new rifle

I never owned a Winchester featherweight till this year, and i recomend the CRF (control round feed) the awsome trigger (great adjustment levels) and if you don't mind wood they look great and feel great, I now own two of them. There are other nice ones out there you should handle a few and see what feels good to you.

What he said! As for a bolt, the Stevens 200 is getting rave reviews for a very inexpensive rifle.

I did shoot a deer once at just over 400 yards with my BLR in .308. But the conditions were ideal: broadside doe completely unaware of my presence, wind in my favour, she was below me in a valley, and I was able to get into a prone shooting position. First round hit her, and she flinched but did not move. I raised the scope a bit higher over her back, took the second shot, and down she went. LUCKY SHOT.

But the BLR is absolutely not a long-range rifle.

Since I have yet to shoot a whitetail outside of fifty yards with my .308 the BLR is under consideration. I mainly want it for going in on my turn to push and those quick posting shots at less then 100 yards. For past 200 I will still have my cinderblock BSA.

I always figured that I should have mounted a bayonet instead of a scope on my BSA as I have taken one buck at less then ten yards, and a few deer at less then thirty.
