Looking for a new set of handguns, Help me decide!

Hey guys,

Looking for opinions mostly. I am looking to pick up a new pistol in 9mm and a fun plinker/trainer in .22LR. Ideally I would like them to be of the same family.

As an example I have been looking at the M&P 9 and M&P 22 as a combo and also some Walther combos.

Later on in the 9mm's life I would like to dip my toe into IPSC.

Any input is very welcome!

I'd go the CZ route owlowl recommends or the PPQ route. I had a PPQ, I miss her. I now have a shadow 2 which I love but no conversion kits yet. The M&P9 I had wasn't my favourite.
 
Can you tell me a bit more about what you didn't like in the M&P?

Too be honest the CZ route has not been pinged on my radar until now! I will have to check it out.
 
SIG Mosquito is a full gun. It has "full slide" as P226 moving around.

Kadet is a conversion on top of the 9mm CZ. In Kadet only small portion of the slide moves like in S&W 41
 
I would also have to go with the CZ shadow and the Kadet adapter. The only problem that you have is that the shadow is so much fun to shoot, the adapter will never be used.
 
You live in Vancouver so DVC or the new range in Langley are options for you to go and try a few different guns. Why read about what WE like? Go hold and shoot these and more guns for yourself and make up your own mind.

If you already own some other handguns or plan on getting any sort of assortment of handguns I'd suggest that the center and rimfire guns being in the same family isn't that big of a deal. However if these will be your only two handguns then there's something to be said for the consistent shape, hold angle and presumably the same sort of trigger feel.

Along that line if you find that the 1911 platform fits you well then there's a number of 9mm options and to go with that the GSG 1911-22.
 
Still use my gsg more than any other...and the collection of 1911's keeps growing...having said that...I'm collecting striker fired too...

+1 on the K22 X trim. I have not fired or even held a X-Calibur but I have several hundred rounds with my K22 X Trim and I absolutely love it. If I could only keep 1 of my 22 handguns, of which I have many, this would be the one.
 
I'm headed out to the range langley this weekend! So yah great idea!

I do plan on owning an assortment of handguns eventually. My reasoning for wanting them to be the same platform is just for consistency when training. Especially for when I get into IPSC or something.
 
I also was eyeing up the GSG's as I already own a 1911 in .45

just don't think I want to shoot competitively in .45, and while i've never shot one, the 9mm 1911's seem odd haha but thats probably just me

Will you REALLY take it that seriously? If you do then you really need to consider the idea of only shooting that one gun for pre-season practice and then for any time you're out you only shoot that one 9mm. Little to no other shooting should be done or it'll mess up your muscle memory. But if you dedicate yourself in this way you'll really get to know that one gun really well. That and shooting up around 1K of ammo per month for practice and other related area matches.

For myself I can't give up on the fun of all those other styles. So I've never bothered with worrying about having near identical guns. I shoot semi autos in rimfire 9mm and .45acp. I shoot both DA and SA revolvers. I'll shoot IDPA one month and cowboy action the next. And in between I like taking the pump or lever action .22 rifle to the local speed steel events.

Mind you with all the different guns I've had to develop a proper trigger pull. Nothing dedicated, just an approach that let's me shoot any style decently well enough to manage to come out in the middle of the heap or better. But because I'm flitting all around I'm not in much danger of winning any big IPSC matches. it's fun though.

So figure out just how dedicated you really want or need to be to suit yourself. And if you're really able to lock into one pursuit and focus that hard on the one event then instead of the matching .22 I'd suggest you buy more ammo. Or buy a reloading setup so you can make your own ammo more cheaply if you don't reload already. Then attend the skills and drills fridays at Abby fish and game. You'll learn a lot there. But bring lots of ammo.
 
Sig P226 9mm with a 22 slide. 2 calibers, 1 gun!

Or do the same thing with many other types of guns, like a Glock 17! For no particularly practical reason I like having multiple calibers on the same frame.
 
CZ 75 SP01 Tactical, Ruger American 45 Auto and a Walther PPQ M2 22LR. All work extremely well and are deadly accurate. I also own an Alfa project 357 Magnum revolver which is a lot of fun also. Lots of fun at the range.
