Looking for a New Upland Rig - What Are You Wearing?

Several years ago I went with a badlands upland vest. It has seen a lot of hard use but is still going strong. It fits more like a pack than a loose strap-style vest, so just be aware of the style differences. Drawbacks are, it is not the bightest "hunter orange", if it is hot out it tends to make your back sweat, and its pretty pricey. Advantages include, its built to last (buy once-cry once), really well designed, and is fit tight to your body.

Having said all of the above...they may no longer be available. There does appear to be others now being made in a similar style by other makers.

My son and I use Columbia. Many pockets along with a big deep back pouch for the birds.

Been using a Tenzing BV16 for the past 4 years. It carries plenty of gear and is very comfortable.

I wear a blaze orange cheap "Golden Retriever" brand jacket, non-lined, single layer, non-insulated, with long sleeves and hood, way oversized, so I can wear it over anything (shirt, fleece insulation layers, etc.), across the full range of seasonal temperatures. Material is unlined polyester, so it breathes well and dries very fast. Material is quite hydrophobic, so it sheds light rain and dew, and can be soaked in rain or dew and dry quickly. In pouring rain, I can put on a light raincoat underneath it because the jacket is so oversized. The material is silent which is a must.

We have to wear blaze orange head gear in Ontario. My system is a blaze orange ball cap when its warm, and when its cold I pull a blaze orange toque over the ball cap. The orange hood on the jacket comes in handy when bushwhacking after a grouse, to keep all the tree debris from falling down my neck. The balsam fir here in the fall are notorious for dropping needles down one's neck! The hood can be pushed off when not needed.

And the blaze orange hood can fit over the rain jacket hood (which is not blaze orange), again to stay legal in Ontario with head gear blaze orange.

For carriage of gear and birds, I wear a small backpack, which is not blaze orange, so I have to tie a cheap and light no-name blaze orange vest onto the top of the pack and drape it over it in order to be legal for Ontario. (For those not familiar with Ontario rules, the hunter's back cannot be obscured by a non-orange pack).

I prefer going light, a light cotton/poly blaze vest with shell pockets, blaze cap, and then a waterproof shoulder bag, for extra shells, water bottle and birds. Lots of ways to skin a cat....

Picked up a Pheasants Forever Browning vest back when they were $70 (now $170), it's a bit hot for summer days, but I wear just a camo rash guard under it and it's not bad. Room for more than a box of shells and the game bag goes all the way around you.

I started using UA Forest camo outside of General Rifle (orange required), this was like two weeks ago while hunting upland (the Supernova is slightly overkill) and fall turkey. Only managed to shoot a few deer with my camera. I just don't bother getting too fancy, I've got a fleece and a matching UA jacket in my day pack with the rest of my gear. It's a bit of weight but I could use the exercise.

I should probably wear orange anyways though, even if not required. Lots of idiots out in the bush some days.

I wear the beretta retriever vest for upland over an orange sweater or coat to get the extra inches as the front isnt orange. Orange ball cap.
