Greeting folks, it's been sometime since I owned at pistol. Back in the mid-1990s, I owned several but moved them off once the gun laws tightened up. Now, I am looking to get back into ownership and completed my Restricted Weapons challenge and addition made to my PAL. I am looking for something along the lines of a Glock 17. Any suggestions?

If you really like the Glock, then you've just made your choice. :D

Other pistols that are are essentially designed based on the Glock that might interest you are the S&W M&P, Steyr M9A1, and Springfield XD (I believe this comes in 9mm as well as 45, yes?). The M&P and Glock are both dirt cheap right now, somewhere in the 600 dollar range I believe. The M9A1 is probably 700-800, and I have no idea on the XD's pricing in Canada, but I would presume no more expensive than the Steyr. I personally think the M&P and M9A1 are both improvements on the Glock ergonomically, but your opinion may differ.

Thanks folks. I'll be calling my local shop this week and getting prices on both the S&W M&P and the Glock 17. Since my budget for this year is around $700, the best cost wins.

Can Ammo at the right top of page has both those guns for 599.00 each.

some sponsor dealers above (Questar) have the compact/sub-compact glocks with extended barrels that make them restricted only.

if that is what you meant....if not, they are pretty good to handle anyways..

I'm back after a 7yrs absent. Bought a Springfield Armory xd40 Tactical and i love it. I put about 1500 rounds through it in the last month had no problems with it.

Just a suggestion.
