I don't want to spend much more than $450.. Looking for something in .223, semi auto would be nice, but I'm on a bolt action budget.

Anyone have a suggestion? If the Remington 700 is much better, I wouldn't mind spending that extra bit for one, but the Savage Axis doesn't look horrible either..
I would also like a scope suggestion.. Everything I own has open sights, figuring I'd change it up.
Anyway, We have a coyote problem where I live.. Cats go missing, neighbour has some sheep/goats/chickens/ducks/rabbits so, it's a hot spot.

And I'm sure this has been posted about 3 billion times...

I have a friend who bought a Stevens/savage in a 22:250 for cheap. Came with a scope. Shoots great. I was impressed how well it shot. $10 worth of camo paint and you could have a real wizzy pred killer.

I imagine it comes in 223 as well. I prefer the 223. Cheap ammo, fur friendly and graveyard dead to 300+ yds.

It seems like a very good deal, and from what I've been reading about the Remi 770, it's almost the way to go.

Hi. Look into a Stevens Model 200 in any varmint calibre. Epp's is asking $348.30. No small varmint calibres listed, but they do have a .270. $328.05 for an Axis with a scope. That might be your best bet. Look locally first.
$450 doesn't leave much for a scope though. And you'd best check the local by-laws for a 'No discharge' by-law.

new or used? stevens/savage is in that range. you might be able to find a rem 700 in that range but it will be used.

I think I'm stuck using my 12 gauge..
None the less, I would like one to go predator hunting, not here, but further out into area '95'

I've got a savage edge in .223 and love it. It shoots great and the scope is good enough to get the job done. The trigger is a decent hunting trigger. The accutrigger might be nice, but the stock one is fine for hunting. No need to drop a ton to get something to taek a few coyotes.

I had a coyote problem on the farm thought I could handle it with a 12ga but they'd stay out 200 yards I dropped 2 with a 22mag and 1 with a slug but they just kept coming so I bout a 25-06 in a stevens 200. Half a box of shells later and haven't seen another one around. Stevens and savages are cheap accurate guns. 223-22250-243 are great choices. For less then $500 you can have one to your door with a scope on it. I think I mite get another stevens in 22 250

We have a no discharge rule for anything larger than 12 gauge, or of more power than a .22 cal LR.

I gotta say go with the Savage. Bought one for my wife in .243 a few years back and she puts 3 shots into 3/4" @ 100 yards all day long. Stay away from the 770 or 710 Remingtons. Not as accurate, and bolts are really sticky.

I picked up a .243 axis XP a month ago, just zeroed it in this weekend. shot 2 groups of 3 rounds to zero in at 250m with bipod. first group 1" second group 1.5" with one dead through the centre. for 400 bucks shipped to your door taxes in you cant go wrong. nice and light, bolt is smooth. Trigger is no accutrigger, but effective. Magazine is mostly plastic but havent had issues yet. Either way im impressed.
note i was shooting 55 grain winchester ballistic silvertips. had less impressive results with some 85gr federals.
