Looking for a recipe

I'm looking for a recipe to load my 9mm and 40 cal.

After talking with some folks they suggested win 231 or titegroup as a powder. So i've been looking through my Modern reloading book by Richard lee and there is no recipe to use with those powders using 124 gr lead for 9mm and 180gr lead for my 40 cal.

Does anyone have a recipe for these that I could use?

I wanted a clean and smokeless powder. If you guys have a better suggestion im all ears.

I used the Vihta Vuori N340 in my 40 with cast bullets. Had troubles with tumbling bullets, and lots of lead stripping off in the barrel. Yes, it burns clean, but generates high velocities that could be trouble if your lead alloy isn't hard enough. Did the same in my .357 magnum. Never tried cast bullets in my 9mm.

That being said, works great with jacketed bullets.

Price was about $36 per pound, on the high side for pistol powder.

I haven't tried W231 in 9mm yet, but have been experimenting with .40 field for a few months now, there's a lot more to it than you are probably expecting.

Firstly, I need to point out that all my notes are in metric units. You can convert metres to feet by multiplying x 3.281, and convert grams to grains by multiplying x 15.42

I have tried several charges of W231, using the Lee 175 tumble lube SWC (more of truncated cone, actually), some of it with Chrony results:

0.26g, OAL= 28.9mm (234 m/s average)
0.28g, OAL= 28.9mm
0.30g, OAL= 28.2
0.32g, OAL=28.2mm (293 m/s average)

All of these produced some leading. Recently my leading was getting worse as my charges got lighter, then I read over on castboolits.com that heavy crimps on .40 S&W cause leading, because the crimp actually sizes the bullet to a smaller diameter. I have stopped using the Lee factory crimp die on my .40 cast bullets, but haven't tested them yet.

The most important thing about shooting lead in any gun is fit of the bullet to the barrel. If the bullet is undersized it will lead, regardless of hardness or velocity. The .40 S&W has gained the reputation of being about the most difficult pistol cartridge to load without leading. I had to ream my mould and sizing die to get bullets large enough to fit my CZ75 properly, and still had leading (maybe due to the crimping issue).

You should also know that most of the smoke from shooting lead comes from burning lube, not the powder, so it's not as simple as just finding the right powder.

Of course, almost none of the above will apply if you're shooting plated lead instead of plain lead.

I use 4.1gr vit n320 with 180 berrys played in my 40. 750 fps in my g22.

9mm lead 124gr - 3.5 - 4gr of titegroup. Anymore and you will be a little fast. For plated 124gr I use 4 - 4.2gr and that gets me into the 1080 - 1150fps
