looking for a rifle for my younger cousin

hey everybod, im looking for a rifle for my younger cousin he's looking for a pump, lever or semi auto. He's 14 and he just got his licence and will be hunting with me.

I told him i would get him one for this years deer season. Because i know what it's like to not have your own gun. And have to use sombody else's so can anybody help me thank you
 
Given your criteria, I would suggest the Remington 7600. There are those who disagree, but I don't think an auto-loader is an appropriate first gun for a youngster. A lever gun is fine too, but is restricted to flat nosed bullets or to the Hornady Leverlution ammo if you choose one with a tube magazine. Savage 99's can be found on the used market, and are still the best choice for a one gun hunter who wants a lever action. The 7600 will eat any bullet style you feed it, has a good trigger, is easy to carry, and it's accurate. Topped off with a low powered variable scope, it's is a fine rifle.

I agree with Boomer about the 7600 being a good rifle. And the Savage 99, in .300 Savage if possible. It delivers near-.308 Win performance with less recoil, and ammo's easy to find. If you'll strictly be deer hunting, no moose in future, a Marlin 336 in .30-30 is hard to beat. Relatively inexpensive, too. And lighter than the autos, except for maybe the Ruger .44 Mag.
I disagree about the autoloader. I believe a new shooter can be taught from the ground up to use an autoloader. That's the first thing military recruits use, after all, and many of them have never fired a shot.
You didn't say if your cousin has done any plinking or paper-punching. or how big he is. If you will only hunting deer and smaller, a 7600 or 7400 or BAR or BLR in .243 would be a good rifle as well.
If your cousin considers bolt rifles, his options will open up even more, but I think that unless he chjooses something very impractical, like an obsolete Remington pump in .32 Remington or something, he should get what he really wants; he'll like the rifle that much better.
 
I prefer levers to pumps and autos (for rifles anyways). I'd go with a modern lever gun in a Browning BLR in .308. I has a magazine that's easy to load and unload. You can shoot pointy bullets for longer shots on game. There's lots of power in a fairly light manuverable carbine in one of the most usefull and popular calibers out there.

I'm a fan of popular calibers that have been around and will be around for many generations. So for me, I'd never recommend a .300 Savage instead of a .308 Winchester. Ammo is going to cost him more money and it will be also harder to find. The .300 Savage is basically a dead round that was systematically replaced by the .308 Winchester. Some here have a "thing" for it here, but it's more of an affection for nostalgia than any real, practical advantage. The more powerfull and commonly availble .308 Winchester is by far a better choice to the new hunter that may not get into reloading now or later.
 
I would go with a browning BLR in 243, 7-08, 308 caliber if you have to have a lever. Personally I would go with a nice little bolt action.
 
You didn't say what type of terrain he would be hunting in but if it is bush or less than 150 yard shots why not look at a 30-30 marlin? Usually can be bought second hand relatively cheap and can add a scope later if wanted. They are smaller and easy to carry and very good starter gun. Good luck to the young fellow and have fun and be safe.
 
If for whatever reason you guys have ruled out a bolt gun, I'm with the above ideas - stay away from a semi for a starting hunter. A BLR in 7mm-08 sounds like it was custom made for this young guy - he might never need or want anything else and you'll probably wind up making excuses to borrow it....
 
ya i was actually looking for a gun too buy. And the terrain is really bushy and hilly. and i know the apprentice thing is stupid he'll be with me so i feel fine letting him carry his own gun. The way i see it if they can pass the course they can carry a gun so ya just looking for a guy for him thanks everybody.
 
no archie my cousin is not fake i actually want to get him a gun because it sucks not having your own to deer hunt with so im looking for one for him so im just looking for people who have a gun to sell cause he really wants and needs one
