1/ I don't know why you have specifically eliminated a bolt action. For a beginner, why not? You are cutting yourself out of about 50 % of the good used firearms available.

2/ Buy enough ammo so that he can shoot competently off hand, not off sandbags. By this I mean ten rounds out of ten in a ten inch circle at 100yards.

Get him one of these Russian SKS then. Kelly's in Belleville just got in 15 of them this morning.

The Perth Show is usually around the later part of March. Belleville is usually a week or so before it.

either a marlin or winchester lever in 44 mag is a nice rifle. other calibers are nice too , such as 32 winchester special or 30-30.
