Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and I'm looking to take up hunting. I'm looking for a good deer rifle also capable of killing black bears.(I don't intend on hunting bear, I just want the option).

I have my PAL and intend on starting to hunt this spring probably, but I don't have a rifle yet. My boss told me about this forum and mentioned he had bought rifles here before so here I am. Any advice would be helpful as my knowledge is very limited so any advice on Ammo, types of rifles and scopes would be wonderful. And of course, if anyone has a good deal on one of these rifles or has a suggestion on a different type of rifle that's good too.

Offers on a good 30.06 would be nice too.

Welcome to CGN. On the starting Forum page, second line down is "Newbie FAQ's" and under that you will find "Access to Equipment Exchange" as well as some other key USER information.
You will do yourself a favour and avoid some potential conflict if you take the time to go and read them.

Welcome to the forum.

All three of the calibers you mentioned will do what you want. If you plan on reloading then 30-06 will be your ticket. I reload all three plus more but find there is more options for the 30-06 then the others. Also I always ALWAYS come home with a handful of '06 brass when i go to the gun club or DNR range.

Take the time to research and find a rifle that fits you and one you will want to keep shooting years from now. It’s cheaper in the long run to pays few dollars now than to buy and not be fully happy with the purchase and buy another rifle a few years later. Having said that I don’t know of anyone with just one gun in their home.

If you are new the best advice you can get is buy quality even if used.
Brands that are quality arms of timeless quality for used old guns

Browning - you can't beat a Browning made in Belgium and by today's standards the Japanese ones are amazing. Used ones can be had for a fraction of the new models cost. I highly recommend old Brownings
Tikka & Sako- are great finish brands, Finland makes fantastic firearms
CZ- Czech made rifles well made and accurate... look up the CZ557 in 308 for a all around rifle.
Savage- again great firearms and accurate. Has entry level shooter kits that get the job done.
Winchester-..et al
Ruger-.et al

From my perspective old guns are much better made for what they cost today compared to new rifles. To get quality today you must pay over $1000, while amazing Browning rifles from the pre 90's can be had for under $800.
There are others that should get you started.

Used get a gun with iron sights, no modifications what so ever other than scoping (no drilling or tapping anything) ie Stock. Also buy from a reputable person here or dealer. The gun exchange section of this site will give you some great options as I just saw one fellow list a beautiful Browning lever-action in 308 for $800. Good prices for lifetime workmachine guns.

Hi look at Rugers M77, Rem 700 bdl and cdl, Tikka, and older savages, lots to choose from. You can get with sites, but not needed. Then get the best scope you can afford. Tradex has a good selection.
