I am in the market for a semi auto 12 gauge. I have a Browning 625 Golden Clays 12 gauge and would like to add a semi auto. I need a lighter gun with low recoil for sporting clays only as I am getting older the body is not liking the recoil. I really want to stay with 12 gauge for simplicity but may one day need to go to a 28 gauge instead. Not looking for an expensive gun so any advice is helpful.

I have a Winchester SX3 Sporting, 30" barrel that comes factory with Briley controls and 5 nice chokes. It shoots like a dream.

I believe there is one in the EE right now, not mine, but the same gun.

as mentioned the SX3 is a good choice. One of my friends shoots a 1100 competition , seems to work fine. I have versa max and I shoot it as well as my expensive Italian O/Us. I just hate picking up empties. Autos are certainly softer to shoot , but buy something that has a ready available supply of parts. Lots of moving parts in autos and if you shoot high volume through them, you will need to replace parts after a while. regards Ken

A price range would be helpful.

Benelli M1 or M2 is a good option, reliable and easy to customize.

Take a look at M1 Anniversary, it was a limited run, basically M2 28” metal with a slightly cheaper stock. Can be used as is (a better recoil pad is recommended), or built into a race machine.

I just bought a Beretta A400 plus and the low recoil with the kick-off system was a pleasant surprise. A Birchwood Casey shell catcher works great too and no need to bend over to pick up your empty hulls.

Consider modding your stock, I got a gracoil unit on one shotty and a g squared unit on another. With the G Squared it feels like shooting a 22, basically an air cylinder inside the stock, mine can with the gun.

Check out precision fit stocks.

If one day you want to go to 28 gauge, consider tube inserts.

If you would like to sell yours PM me with pics and a price?

I had the SX3 Ultimate Sporting adjustable comb. Nice gun but hated the close radius grip and terrible trigger weight pull. The gun on the EE is way overpriced and at best a $1500.00 gun.

Recently sold my Browning Silver Sporting to a friend getting into the sport.

Beretta A400 Sporting with kickoff arriving tomorrow. Like OP looking to give my 60+ shoulder a break on the practice rounds.

Trigger weight on mine is great! What year was yours, and is it the newest "sporting" with the extended Briley controls? I think mine is called an "Ultimate Sporting" The one in the EE does not. Mines a 2020, got it on sale at CSC for $2100 I think. I consider it worth the price. The one in teh EE is pretty up there in price, but so is everything else.

Mentioned in my post I had the SX3 Ultimate as well with the Briley extras and adjustable comb. It was new in 2019, Bought it from a friend in mint condition for $1500.00 and sold to another club member for the same. The Gun Dealer in N.B had the synthetic model on their site for a long time and sold recently around $1800.00.

Well, I went out to Silver Willow and tried out a couple semi’s and bought a Browning Maxis II sporting. Seems to fit me very well and I like the low recoil as well as the light weight.

Thanks for all the replies and advise.

No messing around there, eh?! Good for you, I think you made an excellent choice with the Maxus II.

For others looking at this thread with the same question in mind - Definitely go with gas operated. I'm sure someone here can rattle off a list of current production options for gas guns (I can't, sorry).

I have stumbled across a number of very good deals on used Remington 1100 models while looking at online retailers. My dad has a couple and I really like them for this application.
