I picked up a 10/22 the other day but it's still a bit too big for my daughter (it was more for me anyways :D), any recommendations for a small .22 rifle that would be good for a starter? It'll have to have iron sights and I think bolt action would be preferable to reduce the chance of any accidental discharge.

check out the Crickets, also Savage Cub. Chipmunks are good but not available new, but there may be some on shelves across the country still. Basically the cricket and the chipmunk use the same action

The Marlin 915YS is my favorite. Gun shopping for the boys 2 years ago, this one seemed to be the best made. I really like the fiber optic sights and it is very accurate. These things are a blast when using 22 shorts. Also grooved for tip off scope rings and drilled and tapped for scope bases.

i like the mini-bolt because it is tiny (3 1/4lbs), but operates the same as a full-sized single-shot bolt-action.

i only wish they came with a walnut or laminate stock.

another alternative is the Rossi single shots. they make a youth matched pair, .410/.22 or .410/.17hmr.

probably around $200 for the blued and $300 for the stainless, new.

The mini bolt is a nice 22, but I went with the Savage cub when buying a gun for my girls. It is just as tiny, but I really like the peep sight on it!

You watch a kid shoot and they don't automatically shoulder a gun the way we do, they are looking for that front sight a lot of the time. The peep sight just makes that process easier for small kids.

Just happen to have a an itty bitty Anschutz single shot with iron sights. It cocks on closing but you can also make it so you have to pull back the bolt to #### it so it is real safe for beginers. When the bolt is open the ejector comes back and sits there so you set the next one on it so it loads and closes nicely. I got it for my son but he took to a CIL 190 right off. Two stage trigger and quite surprizingly acurate. It hasn't been out of the vault in quite awhile so I bet it'd just love to have a little girl to cuddle up with;)

I saw a bunch of the Crickets at the Kamloops gun show last April. There were a few kid friendly guns there at the show. You might want to check it out if you can get to it. 3 huge building crammed full of guns, loading stuff, with lots surplus and pretty much anything else you could want.

thanks for the info guys

grnhawg, I may just get in touch with you about that Anschultz

Well old grnhawg, nasty, cantancorus, miserable old prick as he is just happens to have a bit of a weak spot for kids getting into shooting. Heck I even ran the Jr Rifle program at EESA for a few years. My own kids are all either in or finished university now so I don't think I really need that little Anschutz any more. Heck I bet I never fired it myself more than twenty times just to see how it shot. It hasn't really got any big scratches but the varnish has some age cracks. It would be a great project with Dad to sand it down all the while getting familiar with it and in the end proud of something all your own by your own hands. Little stain and some hand rub Varathane or tung oil infn ya perfer and this would be a nice little rifle. Doubt there are many rifles on the market with a better bore
If you want her all it will cost you is the shipping. Oh and the sand paper and varnish. Heck you might want to leave it like it is since it isn't a bad little gun. ;)

Awwww thats so sweet, brings a tear to the eye. Now thats class all the way. What a wonderful thing to do for someone elses kid. Nice touch grnhawg. Nice little bit of Karmic banking there. Win win all around. I bet a rifle like that could have a dozen go-arounds like that and still shoot pretty good.:)

Way to go grnhawg! Good to hear people are still willing to pitch in to get the youngsters into the sport. If I ever figure out who you are in person ( I'm a member at EESA as well), I'll give ya a pat on the back and perhaps a timmies double double if I'm in a generous mood.

I see I'm to late but shooters choice in waterloo has a PINK cricket rifle just meant for a girl. Oh well I should probably buy it for my 4 month old niece anyway. I'm kind of looking forward to teaching her to shoot in another 5 years or so, I think with some minor instruction by age 6 she will be able out shoot her dad.HEHE Good Luck

grnhawg
Good on ya! Its nice to see people like you are still out there and encouraging kids to shoot best of all.
