Looking for a solid 30-30 bush rifle... Win 94 30-30, Marlin, Any other suggestions?

I wouldn't buy a Savage 99. They are way too nicely balanced, come up the shoulder way too easily, have much too smooth of an action and have far, far too classic lines. And that rotary magazine, well who needs to shoot spire points anyway?

The major problem is that you start off with one and after a while you end up wanting a closet full of them.

No, don't buy one... uh..uh... don't do it...

back on track.... unfortunately the Bass Pro price for the Marlin at 499 is an amazing deal! wish smaller stores could come closer to that price.

Accuracy Plus in Peterborough has a few nice 94s in stock. May not be a site sponsor, but I believe they've been commented upon favourably on this site.

... of course Cabela's Canada has a Marlin 1895 ss in 45/70 on special for 629....

Add a 1.5x5 and you've got about of of the best bush guns out there with enough snot for longer shots or heavier bullets if you want a moose slayer.

Yeap. I've zapped small deer in heavy brush with exactly that rig and it's hell on wheels. Using tsx's it just puts a nice hole in 'em and puts 'em down. Closest shot was about 15 - 20 yards. I used the same gun and the same load to drop a moose at 250 yards with a nice heart/lung (the heart looked like it'd been diced with a boat propeller). Went down where it stood.

Great rig for those who want to be able to handle anything, anywhere.
 
For what it's worth, I've got a Win 94 lever and absolutely love it.

Hard to find good Winchesters out there because their owners hang on to them for a very long time.

No disrespect to the Marlin folks - I just haven't had the pleasure of handling one as yet.

Have fun with your new rifle - I travel everywhere with my 30-30.
 
Something I have always kept my eyes open for is a used 7600 Carbine in .308 or even 30/06. But I never seem to be able to line up the coin at the time that they show up. :D
 
Geez we have actually someone here that does not like 99s? All the more for me then. My 99c 308 rocks and has a DM to boot. Thats why I dont own a dirty 30.
 
Personally like the look of the 99's... and will buy one when I come across the right one... for now I shoot a number of 94's, Browning BLR's, Marlin's and Henry's... I like them all.

I only wish I had kept my '99 in .375 Winchester. Damn that sucker shot sweet. The only reason I don't have a bunch of model 99's is the lack of an external hammer for silent cocking on a loaded chamber.:)
