OK, I can't resist - how big a hole are you looking for at 300 yards ? A 50 cal should be viewable with a fairly low power :)

Seriously, a 20x60x70 will be more than adequate for any .223 or larger.

Fellow told me you can see bullet holes at 900m ??? with this one

I have a pentax 14-45x60 PEntax I bought from NYcameraland (sponsor above) that I like. I find the problem is early in the am I can see the holes fine at that distance, but as the day heats up mirage gets in the way.

I think the quality of the optics, rather than the magnification power, is the key issue. I've got a Bushnell Spacemaster, cost about $160. It goes from 20x to 60x, but 100 metres is right at the limit of its resolution for seeing bullet holes (at least with my eyes behind it.) Sometimes I can see a .22 hole at that range, more often not.

For 300 yards there is no way the Spacemaster would be of any use at all. I don't know how much you're prepared to spend, but I suspect if you want something that's reliably clear and bright at that range you're looking at a fairly expensive scope.

I have a Bushnell Trophy 20-60x spotting scope that can handle up to 300 yards without any issue. I paid a little over $350. They are now in the $250 range.

It helps if the background of the target is black. White back groud is hard to spot at times.

As a general rule, the more you pay the bestter quality you get.

I'd be interested in comparing my Swaro to the Kowa. I haven't found anything with better definition but I haven't tried them all:rolleyes:

Me too. I used to be a big Swaro fan (and I still like them a lot) but the Kowas I've used are the top of the heap, as far as I can tell. Now, a side by side comparison of all the top brands (Kowa, Leica, Zeiss and Swaro) would be nice to try just ####s and giggles. I've used the Kowa TSN-821 quite a bit at silhouette shoots (they seem to be the most popular brand on the line) and from what I can tell they're very popular with the birders, who are the real afficionados of great glass.

Kowa. Best glass you can buy. Period.

And this is why...as usual, way out of my $ range :(

"If you want one of these babies, be prepared to lay out about $2100 for the TSN-883 body (MSRP of $2250) and $540 for the 20-60x zoom eyepiece, and $315 for either the 30x wide-angle or 25x long eye relief eyepieces. All we can say is the price is in accord with the performance".

Even they admit it...."price is in accord with the performance"...like most things.

are you buying this in Canada if so have looked at the US for the kowa line there are no problemes with shipping across the border and it is not on the ITAR list AFIK. BTW I got mine from the US lets put it this I saved about $1400.00 on the scope ,cover and eye piece from buying it up here

Hmmm, good point, I'll dig around and see what I can come up with, I live near the border and have a US mailing address so it would be even cheaper for me if I run over and pick it up.

Glad to hear there are no restrictions on the spotting scopes at least...I suppose we will have to 'register' our 'other' scopes one of these days, but that is another thread

I found a really nice demo Pentax PF-80ED-A on ebay and it turned out it was from Camera Land guy who is a sponser here :)

I like it alot came with the 20x60 zoom eye piece, nice cover. If you buy the fixed zoom eye pieces its even better. They come in 18x,25x,37x,50x and 74x also has a camera adaptor available. I think any 1.25" astronomical eyepieces fit in it aswell.

The Kowa price list for Canadian dealers is the same as the USA dealers, all done in USA dollars. FS
