aperture is always king. you need something with at least 80mm primary optics that are fully multi-coated. I'd look at Leupold, Vortex etc...they'll have affordable glass that will do that for you.

for $600 this Schmidt & Bender works like a charm for me to 300 yards and beyond

Put a little thought into the stand too... even a good scope sucks if its jiggling around. You want something rock solid.
