Looking for a tanner

Hi all,

I harvested a bear this spring and need help to get the pelt tanned. So far I have been hitting road blocks. Can someone help out. I am willing to drive up to 2 hours from Ottawa to get this done. Or perhaps work out some other solution. I have means I just need to find that person/business.

any taxidermist should be able to handle it for you. May be a bit of a wait time. or try tanning it yourself. You can purchase a home tanning kit.

I dont know of any taxidermist that is set up to do soft tanning, they do fine on hard tanned head capes using tanning butter but soft tanning is a whole different ball game. Wether you take it to a taxidermist or do it yourself, it will have to be shipped to a soft tannery somewhere...your just adding a middle man that way...unless of course if your end game is to have a backed rug made then the middle man is still needed.

First understand what type of tan you want. If the plan is to simply drape the skin over a chair, hang it on the wall or actually complete a rug you will want a dry tan. A dry tan can also be mounted over a form (shoulder, 1/2 mount or full mount) but if the plan is to have it mounted wet tan is the far more common choice.

Any tannery will offer dry tans for rugs or wet tans for mounts. Very few taxidermists offer dry tans, many do in house variations of wet tans. If you drop it off at a taxidermist for a dry tan, 9/10 will send it to a tannery and simply charge you a markup.

If you want a rug, or mount let your taxidermist sort everything out - that’s what you’re paying for. If you just want a dry tanned skin take it to the tannery yourself. Cost will vary by prep work and size of skin. If you flesh everything, skin the claws, split the ears, turn the lips and nose you will save considerable cost.

Closest one we've tried near ottawa. Work seems good for the most part but takes a while to get them back. There was a little bit of ####ery the last time we sent coyotes in though. Got charged extra because they said that we sent in 2 wolves ... a big coyote is not a wolf.

Theres also https://www.thenaturaltannery.com/ near Perth, never used them though so can't comment on them. But they're closer.
