Howdy,

I am not actually lookiong for one, but my father asked me to find one for him. A club has opened in NB and he would like to compete; he is not planning on the olympics, but a Savage is a little less than he is hoping for. I would like to ask a few quetions:

1) Where are some good places to look for a traget 22 with apeture sights? I have been checking the local gun shops and the EE religiously, but to no avail.
2) What should I be looking for that he may use in this regard? I do not know what manufacturers I should be checking out, so I am just checking for some common names I know. The cheaper the better, but I could probably talk him into the $800 range if it was an amazing gun.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Cheers,

Corey

Benchrest, offhand, or three position?
What caliber of shooter is he going against?
Does he want to win or just have fun?
Lots of older peep sighted guns for reasonable prices around. But if it's the upper level and he is an excellent shot, then you're going to need a late model Anschutz or Walther.
Otherwise just for fun, older Walthers, Anschutz 64's, Winchester 69's and 75's, Remington 513, 540, Brno 3 & 4, and a bunch of Savages.

And if you want to mess with people's minds, old military trainers would be a lot of fun.

My 1968 54-models outshoot any of the newer Anschutz models.;)

I've got a few nice old target guns that I love to shoot but if we run down to an Olympic qualifying competition, I don't think we're going to find any 1960's Anschutz 54's with original barrels and stocks. Or my BSA Internationals or Walther UIT's. Too bad.

I've got a bunch of 60's and 70's target air guns that shoot amazing but if you take a run down to the big competion in Toronto in February, its all high pressure compressed air and scuba tanks and space gun looking air guns.

Wish I could shoot well enough to need a high end .22.

Aside from the used Anschutz 54 that I paid $900 for I have some cheaper one's with peep sight's that I got from the used market.

Thanks for the info, it will give me a place to start. He is looking for a bolt; I think a mag fed is a good idea, but he does not care. He has also mentioned a target Martini; his buddy has a Vickers one where the reciever is built into the barrel.

Would anyone have any ideas where to look for these other than here and Milarm?

I agree with most on the rifles, as I own just about all of them but my
Win. 52E beats them all. In all of them it is a matter of finding the right
ammo and that can take some time and a few $$. They always seem to
like one ammo the best of all. The trick some days is shooting real well
when you have that ammo, so you can tell. So it takes some patience.

A Brno model 3 or 4 with peep sights can be picked up for less than $500 generally.

Great guns, beautifully built and pretty much all of 'em tack drivers...

Just my $0.02 :)

I would agree with all that TheFrenchCanadian wrote. I would also mention that you can get a OEM brand new full Match drop in stock with a raised comb, adjustable butt plate still and rails as well as a Biathlon style stock. I also know where OEM Brno Match sights are as well if you find one with out. Just a thought.

Hmmmm old technology vs new technology.

I have had my share of anschutz 54s old and new my latest is the msr on the board and i can say for sure the technology is improving and for someone to say the older ones outshoot the newer ones is probably not all that accurate. What they should have said was they shoot as good as the new ones cause just like everything else technology makes things better when price is not an option. The newer anschutzs have a superior trigger and lock time this is a proven fact thus creating a rifle that is easier to shoot more perfectly so the idea that the older ones outshoot the newer ones is hard to beleive. That said now i will say how perfect is perfect. If you have a rifle that is absolutely accurate what difference does it make how old it is. I have had some older annies that couldnt have been any more accurate. Most anschutz 54s limiting feature is the shooter. Ive seen it. Ever get beaten in a shoot by your own rifle its a regular event for me, just lend her to a fellow shooter at the same competition you will learn how good it is .... and how bad you are LOL. Im not trying to be argumentative i just had to make this point.

That link doesn't work for me, Bumukas
