Hello everyone,
I am a new hunting enthusiast who is looking to learn more about waterfowl hunting within the Chatham Kent or Lambton area. I have been lucky enough to go on a hunt recently out of Shrewsbury and loved every minute of it, as I was fortunate enough to bag my first ever Blue Bill and a nice Canada Goose (both were my first ever birds).
I realized very quickly that this is something I'd like to continue doing for years to come, however I am very new and trying to take in as much information as I possibly can. I have found it difficult to find people who would be willing to help me continue building on my knowledge and have been told by many that their hunting parties are already at their max capacity. I completely understand this, as many people have been part of the same group for years and are hesitant to bring in someone with little experience like myself so I've learned to not take it personal and just keep looking for opportunities!
I figured this would be a good spot to see if there is anyone within my area that wouldn't mind being a mentor to a new, adult waterfowler. I recently decided to take up hunting and firearms during the Covid Pandemic, as I got hooked on the idea of it from watching Meat Eater and had always been interested in shooting trap. I unfortunately was not able to get out last season by the time my PAL came in and I found a shotgun that I liked, but I have been lucky enough to shoot quite a few rounds of trap in the field behind my home. I'm most interested in waterfowl hunting, as I do not have appropriate equipment at this point for deer hunting (e.g. no crossbow or centre-fired rifle) but would eventually like to get into this as well. I am comfortable in a boat or in a field on a goose hunt, but I still have not purchased my own layout blind yet (largely due to lack of opportunities to get out yet and my lack of knowledge at this point). I always pull my weight and realize that this is an expensive hobby for most, so I always try to contribute to a hunt, whether its money for gas, a box of shells for the person bringing me out, or a case of beer. I am a very fast learner and know that for most hunters, going out on a Saturday or Sunday is something they look forward to all week. I always try to keep this in mind and ensure that I listen to all instructions, ask questions during the appropriate times, and do not do anything to jeopardize someone else's hunt that they have planned. I have had limited experience so far, however I did recently learn the correct (at least that's what I was told) way to pack decoys and ensure lines do not get tangled upon retrieving them on my first hunt. I was also able to learn how to pluck and breast out both a duck and a goose, although I definitely need more practice with this skill too!
Thank you all for your time and if you would be interested in helping me learn more about this fantastic hobby I would be extremely appreciative! Good luck to everyone this season and I hope you get a lot of days limiting out!
Mike
