So I would hate to miss out on this experience of hunting (reported to be a wonderful life experience). I'm 50 years old. My son is 16. We both have adequate experience with firearms, both have a BC Resident Hunter Number, both have Hunting License ( Fraser Valley if required), both have $5,000,000 liability insurance (through CSSA), both have firearms suitable for hunting waterfowl or upland game. We also have .22 cal for other game as well.

We live in Langley, BC. and we would truly like to give hunting a try (we have firearms experience but zero hunting experience). My wife says she will cook anything we bring home. What are the options?

1. We get the forestry maps, and consult the Hunting guide and head out as newbies hoping we have it right?

2. A kindly experienced hunter who would like to pass on his skill would PM me and agree to to guide for a hunt.

Would love to hear via PM for option number #2.

Best Regards,

If you're going to try waterfowling then I'd suggest getting out on the range and practice shooting some clays. Or join a club and do some skeet and trap shooting. Might meet some duck hunters that way too. You need to develop an eye for leading the birds (clays).

If you go waterfowling you also need to put some though into how you're going to recover your birds. If you are only shooting from a field over decoys then you can just walk up to them but over water is another thing. Even if you puddle shoot.

Grouse are not the hardest birds to hunt (and easy to clean too). Upland hunting is like going for a walk in the woods albeit with a shotgun. Unlike deer hunting, the idea is to flush the birds and take them on the wing. Leading can be important but not so much as distance is short. Grouse like to sun themselves first thing so look for them where the bush thins and you get openings. They like the sides of trails too. Plus you can peg them with a .22 when they're sitting.

Have fun.

I'd say you and your son take some time together and try it out. Maybe do a little reading before you go. the worst thing that can happen is some quality time in the woods.
