Looking for a WWII era German Mauser

A cgn member bought a mostly (only safety was missmatched) matching for $700 but that was a fluke. Unless you get very lucky the $1000-2000 is average. If you are looking for a cheaper unit, the east german refurbs are nice & run about $600.

I have been eying Desporterizer's Port K98 on EE. What a beauty! What can anybody tell me about the collectability of Portguese K98's??

That is a beauty, isn't it? You'd be hard pressed to find another K98k in as good a condition that somebody was willing to part with. Most collectors seem to feel you're better off to spend the extra cash to find an all matching example in terms of an investment. I have a 2001 edition of Military Firearms and it lists an Excellent condition 1941 Port at $395 so prices have increased at least 400% in around ten years. Way better than GIC's and you can shoot it too.

I saw that one too. It is a beautiful specimen. Just cannot beat the finish on those contract Mausers.
When the Russian Captures were coming out, collectors were surprised to find, within these captured stocks, were many Port K98 rifles, originally manufactured by Mauser and destined for Portugal. It is generally believed that due to the severe loss of equipment in the Eastern Front of 41-42, that many of these contract pieces were redistributed to the Wehrmacht (German Armed Forces).
I think that one is a great representative example! Good luck!:)
