Looking for action shooting help/advice

Hey all.
I've been out of the short gun game for a while and looking to come back.
I have looked at the IPSC rules on their website and am still a little confused (info overload).
Unfortunately I'm at a smaller club with no action shooting.
So......
Here are my questions ( please feel free to add any other advice), I plan on shooting a production /stock class. Definitely not on a budget for a race gun for a couple years.
1. .40 or 9mm? Is there a big price difference i plan on buying in bulk (and eventually reloading myself)
2. What is a good gun to start off with (to start with general paper shooting and moving up to action sports)?
3. What holster type is allowed for IPSC?
4. Anything else you think would be good to know.

9mm, no advantage to shooting 40 in production unless the ammo is free

If you keep your eyes open you can score a used shadow off the EE with 4-6 mags, belt and holster for reasonable.

Polymer frame guns are very good choices too, Glock 17, Sig P320 and S&W M&P all work great and can be had for very reasonable prices BNIB.

Ammo is what will get you in IPSC, so don't fret about the hardware.

Take the black badge course. You can even borrow gear to get there. Then most of your questions can get asked and answered.

Welcome to IPSC....

1. 9mm. Production is scored in Minor so 40 cal is pretty much a waste unless you are making special light loads and specially tuning the gun to match.
2. Tanfoglio Stock models or CZ Shadow models. Everything else is just trying or a cheap substitute.
3. Anything that covers the trigger guard. Bladetech, CR Speed, lots of others. Make sure it doesn't hang too far from your waist.

Be careful with BladeTech holsters though as the DOH adapter will set the gun out of regulation distance unless you have a large waist. There are several threads about this. Most ranges and matches won't enforce this, however, you can run into a range master that is strict and after measurement, you will have change the holster, or you are shooting for fun :(.
 
CZ Shadow, 9mm. Ben Stoeger books and vids will let you hit the ground running. If serious, 10 mags, 6-7 for comps, 3-4 for dedicated dry fire. Extra trigger springs and a timer app. We want you to be awesome and we love the game and we love you too.

I was at five Qualifiers in BC this year and this was enforced every time.
