Hey ladies and gents,

I am looking to get an SKS. This will be my first SKS. I am looking for a recommendation or two. This gun is not going to be a safe-queen; I am hoping to shoot it quite a bit. I am hoping to get something that is well-built and accurate (as far as an SKS goes) and in good shape.

Can you folks recommend something? I don't mind spending the extra bucks on a russian vs a chinese rifle is one is better than the other. Is there a particular site sponsor or member who is really good to deal with for SKS's?

I am sure that this has been done to death, but I do appreciate you folks looking. Thanks in advance for your help!

Minus exception, russian vs chinese perform the same. Since you will shoot it, you can have brand new chinese under $200. Marstar offer a deal also, you buy a crate of chinese ammo and for $75, you get a new chinese sks to get you started.

If you are gonna modify it at all, I recommend you get the cheapest Russian black bolt refurb that you can find and shoot the hell out of it. Just make sure you clean it well after corrosive. Don't let the guys talk you into buying a nice non-issued Russian if you're gonna drill and tap it, throw out the cleaning rod and bayonet and stick it in a Tapco stock.

My black bolt cost me $159 and will do 2-3" @ 100 yards with handloads and a scope.

Thanks for the info guys.

SoBored: I am not going to do the tapco thing. I want to run it stock. I have an AR for my tactical fun needs. :)

I've bought dozens of SKS over the last few decades, and still shoot my original rifle I picked up in the eighties. As long as you clean them, they will not wear out. They will all shoot about the same, very little exceptions unless its been damaged. The Russians are definitely nicer to look at, but for similar costs you can have a brand new Chinese rifle. Stay away from collector items unless you're a collector. You cannot go wrong buying a shooter as long as it hasn't been modified. Buy stock/original, nothing Babba'd. depending on where you are, you might find a good deal on rifle/ammo combo depending on shipping costs, otherwise buy your ammo local.

Marstar all the way unissued Chinese + Ammo... happy shootting

Chinese and Russain are the same Rifle yes some people prefer the Russain for some reason but really I have both and I cant find much of a difference in quality or operation.

Save money on the rifle and buy Ammo for the fun

Enjoy...

Agree with fiddler. Plenty of good deals from site sponsors. I just got a rifle from Westrifle, and I'm very pleased with it. You probably need ammo as well, right?

The Marstar package deal is great if your shipping cost is low. Not so great for out West where I am. I'd get one of the rifle/ammo packages from TradeEx. Two options, depending on which ammo you want:

wow thanks a million just what I was looking for... cheers

Marstar's $75 SKS's, with taxes and shipping, work out to be a tad more than 75 bucks. A big tad. Check it out before ordering.
I went with a Russian, from TradeEx(free and fast shipping).
Excellent customer service, and you don't have to spend hours removing cosmo.

I bought the Marstar deal earlier this summer with the 1440 rounds of Chinese surplus. I ran 800 rounds through it, not one single jam. I have it dressed in tapco, but original gas tube etc and shoots great. Like all my firearms, i clean them after every use and this shows no signs of slowing down. Its a cheap fun gun and I have no complaints from Marstar. Everything came quick.

Good luck wherever you get it from, you will have lots of fun and there are great conversation pieces when left stock, bayonet and all.
