Looking for Advice - First SKS

Depends where you are located

If your in Ontario or Quebec Marstar has a great deal on a type 56 its Chinese but the military version its fairly robust like the Russian made ones and will take some abuse.

Buy a nice Russian refurb, preferably a later one with a chrome lined bore and shoot the hell out of it for the bullet hose that it is. Keep it well cleaned after each shoot and it will last forever. Any SKS retailer will do. The ones I use are Westrifle and weimajack. The Chinese ones are ok, but they're not as nice as the Russians.

Just wondering why would you advertise non supporting dealer here. To admin can I get a break on my fees every year?

Probably not going to be happy to here this, but Lever arms.
Just go in buy and get out asap. Maybe get some norinco 45acp too if you need it, cheapest ive found.

We are not allowed to direct members to any dealer we wish?
Members talk about Canadian tire selling firearms all the time, is there an can tire icon on the top part of this forum????? Are they a supporting dealer???

to the original OP, I find that the unissued chinese sks are actually better than the hardwood russian sks, if you compare them side by side the wood on the chinese stock is thicker, it seems like they purposely did this to make it more durable (its very obvious when you compare side by side) but the russian stock is so fine and nimble feeling because it is thinner, lighter, and more ergonomic

I think for a shooter a laminate russian stocked sks is the best, if you like the nimble feel. If you like the heavy sturdy feel the chinese sks might be better

I got my chinese one from weimajack for 230 shipped with the intent on shooting it but it is so nice I treat it like my garands, these sks rifles have EXCELLENt value

Thanks for all of the help guys. You folks are great.

As it turns out I went by Rouge River Arms (new store in ontario) to check things out the other day and they had some SKS's in stock. They gave me a sweetheart of a deal on a 1950 Russian one (reconditioned) that has a laminate stock. It looks like it is in super shape. Gunna spend some time today taking her apart and cleaning her up. Hope to get her out to the range before too long.

So, talking about another dealer is 'advertising' now ?

Wtf is this ? That makes me puke.

We are here to help each others, not to help dealers making money.

Forum admins should not control what we are talking about unless its illegal, not respectful etc.

You pay to get a banner/subforum etc. Not a F'ing monopoly over what users are talking about.

I wish this forum had a like button for posts ^^
These forums are great for weeding out the exceptional dealers from the average ones.

I have 2 Russians and one Chicom. I kind of prefer the Chinese one because it is all matching and if the war in Vietnam would have been prolonged, it would have been issued to a front line soldier. The Russian ones, on the other hand, were for the most part stock piled, disassembled and "force matched" for sale on the open market. They were not actively used by Russia, whereas the Chicom SKS was widely used in Vietnam.

For a first SKS, I always recommend the Chinese ones. They're a little cheaper from most places, not really collectable at all (yet, give it 20 years) and if you make a booboo and forget to clean after shooting corrosive ammo, you don't have to feel like a #### for ruining or damaging something a bit more rare.

They also shoot great, occasionally better than a very well used Russian refurb as an unissued Chinese SKS will be at least a tad tighter. Really though, Chinese or Russian, you can't go wrong. With minimal maintenance and care, it'll likely outlive all of us on here. Remember the old saying, the only two enemies a firearm has is rust and governments! As long as you take care not to let either of those two forces destroy your shiny new SKS, it'll treat you well. :)
