Looking for advice on a coyote caller

Seeing lots of coyotes this deer season and thinking I better start knocking some down.

Looking for a reasonably priced caller.

Advice is welcome on what to buy.

I see lots for sale on Amazon and the reviews are all over the place

Also if you’re selling one I’m interested

Thanks.
Go check out what member fratri uses for his set-ups.
Either he is schit house lucky or there are so many coyotes in his area he doesn't need a caller, but uses one to troll
them for our amusement.

Key word here is “may”

From the abstract…

These findings expand results from local studies suggesting that directly hunting coyotes does not decrease their abundance and may actually increase it.
Yes. That study expands results from other studies. That means there are multiple studies that support this idea. So clearly it's not JUST some PETA thing that caught on and grew till it was believed as true.

To be clear - supporting an idea - and “Proving an idea” - are significantly different

There’s no proof that hunting increases population

Only theory.

And as was attributed to both Yogi Berra and Albert Einstein…

“In theory, theory and practice are the same
In practice however, they are not”

This is how scientists talk, especially about topics that have limited research. One study can't PROVE anything - there's always the possibility the study missed a variable for example, but when multiple studies support an idea the balance of the evidence suggests the idea to be true. It's not about proving something, it's about building a body of evidence.

To refute this evidence you need to find studies that found the opposite - that hunting DOES impact population. Simply pointing out non-committal wording doesn't discredit the study in any way, it just makes you look like you've never read a research paper before.

I’m not trying to discredit the study (and I’m nice enough not to throw insults) I’m just pointing out that “suggesting” something to be “true” and “is true” are not the same.

And the lack of a study showing something "is not true" also does not make it "true"

I should have specified a little more. The theory I was referring to was a lot more out there idea that coyotes howled to take inventory of local coyotes then would magically adjust the litter sizes to compensate therefore making hunting useless.
The study you listed I hadn't seen and one note I found to be a perfect explanation and mirror of what I have seen was.

"Hunting can cause substantial mortality in carnivore populations and coyote hunting regulations tend to be liberal, often lacking seasonal restrictions or bag limits (Knowlton et al. 1999, Collins and Kays 2011). Yet, we found that hunting regulations had positive local effects. Other work has shown that high levels of removal can reduce coyote abundance (Henke and Bryant 1999), but that abundance rebounds quickly if hunting pressure decreases (Berger 2006, Gulsby et al. 2015, Margenau et al. 2023). Hunting can result in a younger coyote age structure and might temporarily reduce intraspecific competition for food, leading to larger litter sizes."

This is what I have seen. When actively hunted the local population goes down leaving a void to be filled by transient coyotes. Less grizzled old coyotes and more younger pups or yearlings.

I been looking into this too where aboot are you from? I know Essex county seems theirs little pressure on them lately their even right in downtown Windsor not a lot of people allowing hunting on their property these days is probably one of the main reasons.

I do use electronic calls, with moderate success.
Problem is I find them very distracting, I spend more time fooling around with the remote, and set up than I do glassing for coyotes.
It is better to use a mouth call and binoculars.
Watching the videos educate you on the use of rabbit and fawn distress calls.
I also have my trapping license, and use RCR's snares for coyotes.
Less coyotes equals more deer and turkeys.
Its that simple.
Also an over population of coyotes are prone to disease ie mange, and canine distemper to name a few.

You can easily reprogram a call with Tony Tebbe's Full Stands, which are single sound files that are 12-30 mins and roll through a number of different types of sounds. Google Predator University and you'll find them there.

Foxpro makes some models which come preloaded with Foxcast, which is preloaded with some full length stands, and you can use their programming tool to create your own Foxcast stands
