looking for advice on a good first gun in .22

Own a tikka t1x, 2 cz 457 and anschutz 1761, the best first would be a cz 457 mainly because it can easily be adapted without a gunsmith to any shooting situation, ton of aftermarket part and youtube how to, and quite accurate out of the box.

The 10/22 is hard to argue with — it’s basically the “default” semi‑auto .22 at this point. Reliable, tons of aftermarket support, and everyone should shoot one at least once in their life. But you’re right: they’re not exactly known for match‑grade accuracy out of the box.

A budget bolt gun like the Savage Mark II is honestly one of the best first‑rifle choices. Cheap, accurate, simple, and perfect for learning fundamentals. Mine punched way above its price tag too.

And agreed on the Cooeys. They’re not fancy, but they’re part of Canadian gun culture. If the OP found a clean Model 60, it’ll absolutely do what they need — and owning a Cooey feels like joining a long tradition of shooters who started with one.

Well, I guess I'm in the Canadian culture twice, with having a Cooey 60 and a Cooey 600. Both have period correct scopes. Fun guns and like others have said, part of Canadian History.
 
IMHO using anything except a model 39 or 60 Cooey when I’m trapping feels wrong - it’s like taking along an old friend. Plus they are chambered for short shells if you want to carry a couple more cartridges in the model 60 tube mag. BTW CB shells also cut down on the report of the rifle if trapping close to landowners barns so not to disturb their livestock when dispatching nuisance animals (and are more than up to the task). Plus as others mentioned it’s still very satisfying to knock off the odd groundhog, crow or a rack of steel plates with the open sights.
