Looking for advice on hunting with a Mauser...

what scope is that?
im a big fan of scout style mounting, i own both leupold's and burris' scout scopes (dont want to remove them from the rifles they were purchased for), but i dont think i can bring myself to buy a third one, theyre a bit pricy.

how does the SK scout mount attach?

All you need to know about mounting an SK scout mount. Easy as pie, hardest part is removing the rear sight, which can be a #####.
Mount is held in by 2 side screws, 2 top screws and by its rear foot. Appears solid.

Im using a cheapo Ncstar 2.5x LER scope right now, not top quality but its holding out for me. There isnt much choice for true Intermediate eye relief scout scopes like the leopold m8, most of us use LER pistol scopes. Im new to the scout style myself and im quite fond of it.

...with all that said , the only milsurp which is best for serious hunting is the Enfield.

almost everyone i know has an enfield moose gun they bought for $80-100, heh.

my only gripe with enfields is the ammo cost. id like something with dirt cheap plinking ammo like 7.62x54R or 7.62x51. i can buy cases of cheap ammo for these for plinking, and SP hunting rounds are also widely available at less than half the cost of other calibres. if i buy a .303 enfield i may as well buy a schmidt-rubin, etc.

is there a canadian source for the scout mounts?
after my last US order ive resolved never to order anything from the US again. i ordered a $50 part, was charged $25 US shipping, then $10 duties + tax on the $85, and then UPS charged me $40 brokerage fee (and tax on that too if i recall). i almost lost my mind... i hate ordering from the US.

Swede Mausers

I'd keep an eye out at your local gun shows for a nicely sporterized M96 mauser in 6.5x55 if you're looking for a great deer rifle.

Another +1 for a sporterized Swede Mauser...

They come up on the EE quite often. And don't break the bank.

There are very few Mausers that are chambered in calibres/cartridges that won't kill any game in North America, just the way they are. Just don't be bubbafying a milsurp in full military configuration by scoping it. Drops the value in half.

Your preference for 7.62 is reasonable. But 8x57 is slightly more powerful and readily available as cheap surplus.

And 6.5x55 and 7x57 are also excellent calibers and no deer would ever know the difference.

Buy any mauser (in above calibers) that appeals to you. I find the small ring mausers make the neatest sporters, but I am happy with both flavours.

It is a Bushnell Trophy 2-6 X 32 Long eye relief. I had a line on a Leopold fixed 2X and it was nice but it was in silver. The Bushnell is nice and I had a connection through Bushnell at the time so the price wasn't outraguous.

I remember the enfields being about $15.95 when I was a kid and wanting to buy one so bad, but my Dad got me to settle on a 22 cal cooey 600. He gave me some good advise, "you don't plink cans with them riflles boy, they fer killin."

I think he ment were too close to our neighbours :)
