Been putting this off for a while now but it needs to be done. I picked up a Remington 870 express rifled cantilever last year and now looking for some advice on a decent scope for deer hunting. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

yup I agree I just got a vxr 3to9 x 40 for my 20g slug gun .will us it for turkeys as well .I really like the lighted crosshair ,Dutch

I am now a believer in Leupold. They sit on all but one of my rifles. For the 870 cantilever rifled barrel, the VX1 1-4x20 shotgun scope is the way to go! The VXR (pick your magnification) is also a nice choice, but for slugs, you really don't have much range to need much magnfication.
(and Burris medium steel rings)

I really like your set up but on a 12g I would be looking for scope rings with a few more screws , I like the four screw rings .just for the recoil of the shotgun ,Dutch

I'll stick with Leupold theme and recommend the UltimateSlam 3x9x40. It is designed for shotguns and muzzleloaders. I have one on my A Bolt 12 guage and am very pleased with how it works. The field of view and low light capabilites of the scope are very good. I must admit though, there is a lot of good to be said for a Bushnell Trophy XLT 3x9x40 sitting on top of an 870 slug barrel. I've been shotgunning for deer for 25 years and successfully used that combination for many of those years.

I never gave that a second thought. If it becomes a problem, I will change out the rings. Seems very sturdy.

For image clarity and toughness, the Bushnell Legend HD is a good scope. Only downside is that the crosshairs are very thin.

I have a Leupold ultimate slam 2-7x33 on my 20ga slug gun, so far I'm happy with it, I like the 2-7x, lower magnification gives you a wider field of view than a 3-9x.

Leupold ultimate slam is a nice scope, a nikon slug hunter is nice and if you are cheap like me a bushnell trophy 2x7 with doa 200 on savage 220 and mossberg 930 gun.

I put the Leupold Ultimate slam 3-9 x40 on my 870 super slug last year and have nothing but good things to say about it. The bullet drop reticle is great, works. The clarity is awesome and the eye relief is generous. The only thing I did was upgrade my rings, as it started sliding on me, from the recoil. I upgraded to 3 bolt rings and no problems since.

I agree with you 100% I see guys spend good money on guns and scopes and then cheap out on rings ,if you are going to put a scope on a slug gun or turkey gun get some real good rings as the recoil is going to be more then 90% of any rifle .and scope will slide on a shotgun .I like weaver styel rings .or any 4 screw ring .the more surface area the better for rings ,and the lower you can keep your rings and scope the better ,I see a lot of guys with there scopes way to high ,the closer to the bore the better ,Dutch

Not trying to make waves at all, this is strictly out of curiosity, to each their own, but have you considered picking up a .30-06 or a .270 for deer hunting? I could foresee longer ranges that you could hunt them, and less meat obliterated by buckshot or a slug

I'm using Nikon Slughunters on my 870, muzzle loader and Ruger no.1 .
Good optics, price point and long eye relief. Not as elegant as the Leupold but approx. 2/3 the cost.

In a lot of areas in southern Ontario it is shotguns only for deer ,this is why we invest so much in to slug guns and scopes .I have a mossburg 500 in 20g with a rifled barrel and have a vxr 3to9by40 coming for it ,with the iron sights I was good out to 75 to 100 yards but the sights cover most of the target at this range so a scope is the answer as most deer we shoot are at first and last light or are being pushed by hounds or man doggers ,it is much easy to shoot a moving deer with a low power scope that you can actually see the deer then with just iron sights that cover most of the animal .a good slug gun with a good scope can be made to shoot out past 200 yards with the right ammo and lots and lots of practise .I us the shotgun for turkeys as well with the scope ,for the same reason ,we shot turkeys in the head with shot sizes 45and 6 .so with a good scope we can get the poi to line up with the poa .so if your shotgun shoots high or right you can adjust the point of impact to line up with the point of aim .Dutch

I ven been putting it off for some time because I was stuck on the leupold but just couldn't muster the power to pay more for a scope than I did for the rifle itself. Thanks for the suggestion. I ll check it out now.

This why I have been putting it off. I hear nothing bad at all about the ultimate slam but every time I come close to saving enough money for one I end up buying a new firearm. The struggle is real.

what the EE here as there are a lot of good scope come up for sale ,luppys always show up for good prices Dutch
