Looking For Advice On The 260 Remington

Ian,
While I can agree with the Stiller being a better option as the basis for a custom rifle, I have a tough time with your assertion that the Howa is a better choice. The Howa is an action which is fundamentally sound but no better than, and perhaps not equal to, a Remington. Regards, Bill.

260 Rem

Hi Max Owner:
I have just started shooting my new Broughton 5C 30 inch barrel in 260 Rem. this summer. I get 2950 fps with the 139 Lapua Scenars (moly) and 44.5gr H4350 which is not a hot load. You get the extra speed with the 30 incher. As for scores I won the SJ Perry match in Connaught this year (DCRA.ca) and the final at Invitation Val-Cartier in QC (PQRA.org) Fclass. And I don't have a fancy rifle. Just a 700P LH with an Eagle stock pack and Harris bipod. I did 89/90 at 600 yds (14Vs and a 5 for finish) For comparison purposes my buddy left the 900m line at the Perry with 10 ½ MOA wind on his 308 (26 in.) and I had 6½ on my 260. Need I say more? Best Regards. Serge Radacovici
PS: feel free to ask any questions. I moly my own scenars and do not meplat trim (they don't need it) I also use Rem brass unsorted. I checked them and they're pretty consistant. CCI BR2 and I neck turn to .013 even (the rem brass is .013-.015) loaded rds are .290 (.264+.026) and my chamber is .296 and another thing. I have 4 bbls for that 700P (20 inch 308 factory, 27 inch Madoco 308 palma, 260 Rem Broughton and 22-250AI Gaillard which I interchange easily with the Sinclair tools, 125$, action wrench, barrel vise and recoil lug bracket. The 260AI doesn't last long enough for me.:D

I own a 23" 1:8 twist 260 Remington (Gaillard barrel)

no problem hitting 2750 fps with either 140 Amax or 142 Sierra HPBT, also 3150 fps with 107 Sierra HPBT. All shoot half moa if I do my part (and this is with fixed 6x scope and a total rifle weight of 8.5 lbs)

the 260 is an excellent cartridge and very good on barrel life.

260 Rem and 243 Win

Hi Max:
Not that I don't like my 260 Rem and I won't downgrade the 260 AI but if you're serious about a top performer round (low barrel life:() you might want to consider the 243 Win. The top US shooters in sniper matches use it. Std 243 cartridge with 115gr high BC 6mm bullet and Reloader 25 make a winning combo. I believe it gets 3150 fps. See David Tubb on DTAC bullets. I'm not sure it's the 115. Could be the 107gr. And for brass Lapua makes the 243.
I was a bit sad to find only Remington brass in 260 Rem. The 243 has another advantage. Low recoil. With a good brake you're in business. Good Shooting. Serge

260 Rem

Max:
If you want to start from scratch I would recommend a GAP 7000 action (750$) It's a beefed up Rem 700 with an enlarged integral lug and 20MOA picatiny rail (also integral) It comes with a tactical knob. For a barrel I would suggest a Broughton 5C 1 in 8 inch medium benchrest finished at 28 in. min (300$, 2 months) a jewel trigger (200$) and maybe a fully equipped Robertsons Prone stock (~1100$) It will be 200$ to get the action barreled. A badger Ordnance DMS M5 triggerguard would be nice (comes with 5rd AI mag 335$ at Triad)
You will have to pay a bit more to get all this on the stock maybe. I don't know if the 1100$ stock includes inleting.
For a scope I like the Nightforce 5.5-22X 30mm tube with illuminated MLR.
It's a little dear but I think it's worth the money (~1550$ at Midway)
I think you'll be in business with that. 150$ for 500 remington cases and 200$ for Redding comp dies. The .288-.290 bushings should do the job. You can get 139 gr Lapua Scenars from Hirsch Precision at 37$/100.
Good shooting. Serge
