So after doing a little soul searching and taking stock of all my firearms I am remiss to find out that I do not have a revolver in my personal armory .

So I have looked around and have decided on the 1873 remake of the "gun that won the west" .

The four makers of this replica ( if there are any more please let me know ) are in no specific order are Ruger , Uberti , Colt and Pietta .

If you have any personal experience with any or all of these companys please let me know .

P.S. I have chosen to go with the 7in barrel in .45 long ( any hint on where to pick up the ammo would be a great help too ).

Cheers, Greenman

I asked Peter from Rusty Wood Trading Company and he said Uberti and Pietta are quite comparable for SAA clone.

Rugers are tough but not a true SAA clone.
Colt's cost $1600 and up.

I have two Uberti 1873's and they are great guns both are 5 1/2 inch barrel versions one in .45 Colt the other is a black powder cap and ball .44 cal. The twist here is that the black powder .44 gun is a smokeless frame and the .45 Colt is a black powder frame. The difference being how the cylinder pin is held in,the black powder frame has a screw holding the pin in and the smokeless has a spring loaded button.
Here is a picture of the cap and ball SAA:
It is a coin toss as to which is better Pietta or Uberti the grips on two of my Uberti's are really nice Maple.
The ammo for these is expensive (.45Colt)... about a dollar a round, I had to get into reloading in order to shoot mine regularly. As it happens the cast hard lead round nose bullets also work great in 1911's.

I have the Pietta in .357 w/ 4.75" barrel. I think it is very well made for the money. I got it from Marstar. I've only fired about 50 rounds through it so my take on it is very limited. It has gone bang every time...I haven't had any issues so I can say I'm satisfied.

You won't go wrong by any stretch with Pietta, Uberti or Ruger. The quality of Pietta and Uberti are very near on par these days with both being excellent firearms with a ready supply of parts "just in case".

Ruger makes an excellent single action gun. But due to the Ruger action it's really not a faithful 1873 clone. If this fact doesn't bother you then buy with confidence of getting a first class firearm.

Really it almost comes down to which barrel length and finish you want along with staying faithful to the classic '73 internals or going with the new world Ruger internals.

I happened to hold the ones I was looking at and the pietta had the smother action , but the grip is so small I have to hold it with my ring and middle finger , does anyone else have this issue or are my mitts just too big ?

That is the proper way to hold it. Having the pinky under the grip makes it easier to roll the gun back into place after a shot. The pinky acts both as the pushing finger and as an indicator that the gun is properly back into place. All the 1873's with the regular grip will fit this way.

If it really bothers you then you could go for one of the Bisley frame and grip guns. Those are longer and more vertical for use as a target shooting gun at the Bisley matches back in the day. But then it's more of a specific style instead of the classic "gun that won the west".

By the way, you're going to find that the factory ammo options are all crazy expensive. If you insist on one of these guns in .45Colt then you will most certainly want to reload for it. Brass and bullets aren't hard to find. And with reloading you'll keep your cost down to around $9 to $11 per 50 depending on your bullet options. The other good news is that .45Colt shares bullet size with .45acp. So you've got tons of bullet options.

Colt does not make a replica...it makes the original SAA since 1873 (with little changes). I would go for the original...
But if you prefer a replica...the best copy IMHO is the USFA!

OK

I agree Colt is the best choice.

But....

You could get a matched set of Rugers and a nice rig to hold them for the same price as one Colt..

Thank you I just am used to shooting my sig 226 and STI Spartan and the feel of Pietta was so small in my hand I through it was incorrect, thank you for the response of how to hold it BCRider .

Who would carry a selection of gunbelt/ holsters and the colt or Ruger ?

I like the fact that the Ruger is slightly larger than the others, decent quality, and doesn't break the bank to buy one. Not too concerned about them not being true replicas, I did have to go for the .45.

You might want to read the information on Pietta's on the Marstar site. I have one in .44-40 with the 7 1/2 inch barrel. I like my Pietta with black powder loads.
