My wife and I live in a small rural town. We are opening a small hardware store, and we are looking to bring in some ammunition. What are some common types of ammunition for hunting and target practice? We aren't looking to bring in specialty ammunition, as we don't feel there is a market for it in our area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

22 LR have a selection of boxes and bricks, standard and high velocity

22 mag (tough to find, if you stock it word will get around and it will sell)

22-250 45-55 grain varmint loads

243 80-100 grain deer loads

270 130-140 grain deer and elk/moose loads

7mm Rem Mag 140-160 grain deer and elk/moose loads

30-30 150 grain deer loads

308 150-165 grain deer and elk/moose loads

30-06 165-180 grain deer and elk/moose loads

300 Win Mag 180-200 grain deer and elk/moose loads

12 gauge a selection of steel and lead bird shot and a little bit of buck shot, couple boxes of slugs

410 lead bird shot and some slugs as well

That covers the most common cartridges and is just a guideline, just check out what other businesses are stocking and find out from coffee row what the locals want but can’t find, keep track of what customers ask for and you’ll find the trend for your local area.

If there is a gun range with hand guns, in your area?, some 9mm, 40, 45, maybe 38 special, hard to find at times.
You need a license ,I presume you know, it is cheap for ammo sales.
Small town, Ask your customers what they shoot.

Everything this man said . sorry brother you forgot 20 gauge shotgun shells . not to sound like an idiot but never sway as in if someone forgot their Pal at home . never sway . I hope your business is very successful.

Depends where you are and what people hunt in the area. Not much point in carrying non toxic shotgun shells if there is no waterfowl hunting. Not much point in carrying too much handgun ammo if there is no handgun range.

Still, buying a case of 9mm and 45 ACP isn't too expensive to test out if there is a market for it.

You might want to put a ammo request sheet out to find what people are using in the area, too. You should also stock at least one type of 6.5 Creed ammo, it's one of the cartridges that keeps increasing in popularity

Consider doing a lot of business online. If you stock up when prices are good, you can make $$ when supply dries up. You will have $$ tied up in inventory though.

Yes I did forget 20 gauge, and 303 British. Definitely need to stock those as well. Good luck! We need more small business ventures that support the firearms community

I think that this is quite a reasonable list. I would add the 160 and 170 grain loads to the .30-30 though. I have shot them all and they are all still quite popular. I don't own a 6.5, but their sudden popularity doesn't go unnoticed. Adding a .338 to the list sure wouldn't hurt. These days .223/5.56 and 7.62x39 are worth carrying in abundance as well.
