I am looking at buying an accurate rimfire bolt action rifle.

Would it be better to go with .22lr or .17hmr??? I hear .17 has a little more recoil which I would prefer as I would like to use the rimefire to get better at shooting and eventually get into precision centrefire.

Recommendations and opinions?

Accuracy goes to the .17 If your ammo budget is generous, it would be a good starter.

That said, get a .22 It's an excellent choice for learning simply because you can go bang 500 times for $20.00 The more you shoot, the better you'll hopefully get. If you can shoot .22 accurately to 100 yards you're off to a good start for centerfire.
 
Everyone should start with an LR... look at the Savage FV and consider dropping it into a Boyd's stock of your choice... for very little money you can have a very nice accurate rifle.

^x2 I'd add to that, if you buy a good .22lr, and quality ammo to feed it, the accuracy of it will rival anything an HMR can do, just at shorter distances. In my opinion, neither is comparable in report/recoil of even a .223, let alone anything much bigger...so you might as well stick to the .22lr for practice. Don't shrug-off it's diminutive size~shooting a .22lr well takes allot of skill/practice too, with the added bonus of low ammo cost.
 
you could *almost* reload a small CF for the cost of the .17 rimfire rounds. If the goal is trigger time as a means of improving your shooting, then its .22lr all the way. Teaches you a lot about shooting in the wind as well.

"almost" as in "after" you've invested hundreds of dollars into reloading equipment..? :)

I mention that as someone who has bought a re-loading press, and getting a little overwhelmed at what else is now req. to get set-up to do this right.
 
Probably CZ or savage if you want cheap . I know a lot of people don't agree but I love my Ruger 77/22 target barrel in 22WMR , I can beat my brother's .17hmr savage all day long within 125m (maybe I lucked out and got a good one)and the rugers finish is way nicer then the savages IMHO i also like the WMR for the heavier round and a decent velocity . Now I cant speak much on .22lr bolts but I am looking into either a CZ 453 or 455 varmint , for price , accuracy and finish( all the backing I have for those points is what I read from other people though)
 
Definitely start with a .22 rifle. Do not rule out the old ones either. inexpensive and many can rival the "big name-big priced" rifles. I have 2- 1940s Marlin 81s that shoot extremely well to 200 yards at gophers. and a new to me ..Marlin .22 Mag from a fellow CGNer....what a rifle...amazing at 200+ Why new when the old will do...

If you are looking for accurate bolt action rifles in 22LR I suggest CZ or Savage. I have done all kinds of research there and found they are great. I noticed you are from Hamilton if you ever make your way out to Silverdale I have access to a Savage MK II GL and my CZ455 Varmint, you can shoot them both if you want to make an informed decision.
 
Thanks all. Ive been shooting milsurps a lot with open sights at 100m and although i get decent groups sometimes (3-4 shots within an inch or so) it is difficult to find a steady target point. Im gonna try to print off some better targets for that.
But i definitely appreciate the low cost of 22lr and that is why im after one now. I was thinkjng savage for the cost and accutrigger.

Mk2 bv or fv i think.
