I'm looking for an above average gunsmith in the U.S. who can restore and convert an antique status colt to .45 acp for me. I want the gun to be like new when finished. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to get a .41 Colt Thunderer converted. If anyone knows of one like this for sale here in Canada, that would be even better.

If you could find someone to make a new cylinder, MAYBE a 38 Special. Really not a lot of spare meat on one of them.

Or look smaller, and have some liner pressed in and chambered to 22WMR.

'Course, you could just buy some .41LC brass and reload for it. :) But that would be easy, wouldn't it?

Yer gonna want to reload anyway, as most factory ammo is a little warm for what they were designed for.

Colt never went any larger than .41 colt on these 1877 DA revolvers as they are a bit smaller than a SAA and as mentioned did not have enough meat in the cylinder. That's one of the reasons they sell for a lot less than a SAA.

The other reason, is that you pretty much need the patience of Job, and the skills of a watchmaker to be able to fit and assemble the working mechanism.

It was early on in the designs of double action revolvers, and William Mason, the fella that designed it (and several of the features of the SAA) did a great job of fitting all the parts in to a limited amount of space, but they do need to have a bunch of wear points watched in order that they work well.

Lots of them got used by kids as toys over the years, and are somewhat the worse for wear, eh.
