As the title states, I'm looking for an electric skeet shooter. I haven't looked into it a whole bunch yet just looking for some opinions. I don't want to spend a whole bunch but will look into a more expensive one if necessary. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

This christmas marks 2 years since I got my champion easybird doubles from Lawry shooting sports in London. I'm happy with it.

You can add on options like the wobbler and the oscillator and cart as you see fit, or can afford.

I looked pretty hard before choosing that one, and it seemed that one was the best value. After the champion you're getting into the 3-5000 range.

I bought a Champion Wheelybird, on sale it cost $375 delivered to my door. The state of our dollar would push the price up a bit, but Cabelas had them on sale recently.
It throws birds about 75 yards and perhaps 80 on highest spring tension. I plan to use it set up some sporting clays type situations once Spring comes.
I had to adjust limit switch to get it working perfectly, and made an aluminum horseshoe to replace the vulnerable plastic top rim of the loader. You will also have to wire in an extension to the 25 food trigger cord to make some more difficult crossing shots.
I think I got good value for the price.

You don't want a "skeet" shooter, there is no such thing as a "skeet".:) What features do you want on your target thrower? Do you want a thrower that just throws all targets in one direction and at one angle, or do you want one that varies the direction, or angle, or both, from target to target?

Ya!!

I wouldn't mind one that oscillates and throws doubles, just had concerns on how good they are. I would rather have good single thrower, standard position than a mediocre double thrower

The under $1000 units are garbage, plain and simple. Read the posts. Mine works great BUT I had to loctite this, I had to change this from plastic to aluminum, I had to adjust that, spend a few extra $$ and get something you aren't having to adjust, tweak or change things on to get it to work consistently. Call Lawry's. Tell them your intended use and budget and they will steer you in the right direction.

I agree. Look into the "more expensive one". The Bowman or MEC models look good.

In reply to recommendations for more expensive -

The next step up starts about 3x the money. Yes, you will get more for your money, but how serious a user are you? I like our club's Winchester Western White Flyer with Western Retro carousel, and I know of private users who have bought one, but I would rather put the extra money into guns, ammo and shooting fun.

I can do a bit of fiddling with peripheral details to optimize my purchase, for that substantial difference in money. No trap machine, that I have been around, works without maintenance and adjustment.

Note - the Champion throws clay targets really well, which is the thing that counts. I don't have a long term durability test yet, but I will report back after next shooting season.

Absolutely!! I have 7 machines, My first two are a champion double and a champion single. From that I learned to only by good ones, so I have 5 Promatics. They are great, that have some options for some that are cost effective also. The Merlin is not a bad thrower, or a Harrier XTS. Smaller target capacity but still life time use machines. An All American Ranger is a really awesome machine if you were only gonna have one, but as I learned 6 machines ago 1 leads too 2 and so on !haha!! good luck, Happy shooting.

Tom Ferguson in Calgary with TA Ferguson is a great guy and will get you all fixed up.

Steve.

I'm really happy with my Atlas AT-50, have never had a breakdown over the 7 years I've had it. One nice thing about it is the major components could be sourced locally if something did go wrong.

I've got one on my place, and it works great. I bought a 270 bird turret/carousel and leave it on the main trap 24/7. So I can't shoot doubles with the turret on, but the singles and handicap are a lot of fun. I've had the machine for 12 or so years, and it's been great. I had a lot of breakage a couple years ago, but replaced the carrier rail and a spring for the same rail and it's back to normal. There is some breakage, but I don't have heated storage for the birds, and the fluctuating weather hot cold and damp is a little tough on the targets. We still manage to shoot a round of 25 x 5 with out reloading the trap. A box of clays is 135.

Maybe you can hire this guy.......... Not sure if he is still available for work.... Or for breathing..... Not a good line of employment!

I bought the DS100 from Ian at Western Retro with the wobble option. 5 years later and thousands of clays, it runs like a top, and nothing has broken. With the Olympic arm, and white flyers, you can crank the speeds up to 80mph if you really want a wobble doubles challenge.

No regrets on the purchase, I would do it again in a heartbeat!!!
