Looking for an opinion on sub $1000 rifles in .308

Weatherby vanguard so with the wooden stock. Yeah!

Actually, the stevens 334 which is an Ata turqua. (I know...turkish) gets excellent reviews and is accurate out of the box from what I have read) they look great in walnut.

I wouldn't discount a nice voere hdf, husqvarna 1900 or the like if you see a nice one at great north gunco either. Slick as snot actions.

The Ruger is great but the mags suck. The best upgrade is a Boyd’s stock or magpul stock to convert to use aics magazines. Still might be under 1000. Savage is good too. You could also consider a Howa 1500

Ruger American is a solid choice but I'd agree the mags are the weakness. For something different have a look at the Mossberg Patriot LR Tactical 308. Comes in an MDT stock with AICS mags around that price. Added one to my collection last fall and am quite impressed.

I just purchased the Ruger Gen 2 predator in .308 and shot it for the first time on Sunday. I couldn't be happier with the gun. Shooting 4 different types of 150gr ammo. 3 of them shot under .75 moa. It's very comfortable to hold and the muzzle brake makes recoil very light.

Another vote for Howa 1500/Vangaurd S2 as a cheap option. If you go a little over $1000 with one you can get one that is cerakoted, but the $800 ones are great - have owned both the SA Howa and Weatherby.

Also, can get a basic Tikka for around $1000.

My first thought was a used Tikka T3 or T3x... best value around, in my opinion.

I had a lite in .308 once upon a time. Was great for hunting/carrying, was a bit much at the range.

If i was wanting a combo range/hunter right now, I'd get one with a varmint barrel and suck it up for hunting. I'd add a boyd's stock when I could afford it, and use the plastic stock for hunting. They're easy to swap.

SRS
I am of the same opinion.
As a owner of two Tikka, including a T3X in 7mm, those carry an excellent value, and will shoot sub-MOA.
I have a 0.5 MOA out of mine.

Hope that helps

I know that asking opinions on things is like asking for a correct weather prediction... but here goes...

I'm looking for something that I can take on a hunt or to the range...
I have my brain fixated on the three that keep coming up:

- CZ 600 Alpha (I have to say that I keep coming back to this one as my 'top' choice... because... well... CZ)
- Ruger American Gen II Predator (just looks ###y... the pic rail is an added bonus, adjustable cheek, fluted and cerekoted barrel...)
- Savage 110 Hunter

If I were to go with a used rifle... obviously my choices will expand a bit... (like CVA Cascade... Bergara B14... whatever)

I'm trying to save some cash to add better optics which is why I've set a $1000 ceiling

Thanks in advance!
At that price, I'd definitely be looking at used. If you're not in a big rush, you can get a great rifle for $1000. Consider the features you want. For instance, a Remington 700 safety doesn't lock the bolt down whereas a Tikka does. Winchester M70s and Ruger m77s have controlled feed mauser-style actions and 3-position safeties. Any of these can be had in great condition for $1000 used, and are all better rifles than all of the new options you have listed.

Hell, you can get a mint-condition Husqvarna 1600/1640 for about $500-$600. It's a better rifle than anything you or I have mentioned above, and you'll have loads of cash left over for a scope.

Good luck with your search.

OP said Ruger Gen2, don't those use AICS pattern magazines from the get-go?

Not all Winchester M70s are CRF.
