Hey guys I'm looking for an over under 12 Ga for the wife and was wondering if anyone knew of a place around Prince George BC or where I could order one online for under 1000$. We're both beginners and go out just for the sheer fun of it so it doesnt need to be too fancy but I'd love to get her something she can enjoy shooting doubles with as our pump can get a abit frusterating for her. Also if you guys can recommend a shotgun for us that would be great. I dont know alot about the over under game but she shot a cheaper turkish gun our friend had and absolutely loved it so if you guys know of anywhere to get my hands on one I would appreciate it thanks!

You need to let her try a gun that fits her well... especially for females. Most shotguns are designed for a man between 5'10-6'0.

I would try and get her into a shop or a club where can try a variety of shotguns... and see how the length of pull, weight, swing feel.

The new CZ over/unders that are made in Turky look to be very nice especially for the price.

Have a look for a used but better quality over and under (Browning Beretta Ruger ect), they are better than the cheeper new over and unders and will hold the value if you ever decide to sell them.Fit is the most importat thing with shotguns as was mentioned above try as many different guns as you can a poorly fitting gun can beat the crap out of you.A semi auto is another good option my wife likes the semi because of the reduced recoil but again try different ones to make sure they fit.Good luck/Have fun shopping

Mossberg Maverick Hunter for less than $500 at Cabela's

Not very good for clay target sports though, weighted a bit differently and doesn't have vented ribs.

Plus I think it's a little bit ugly.

I wonder how it would hold up after 50,000 rounds, which isn't much for a trap or skeet gun.

I've test fired the Mossberg. It's very poorly built. I wonder if it would hold up past 5,000 rounds much less 50k.

If you must have a cheap o/u get a Baikal or a good used one.

I would second the motion of a used Browning, Beretta, Winchester, Ruger. Many folks pho pa the Ruger's but they a very solidly built, and like the others mentioned you will never wear it out. Used they are cheaper than the other three. Guns that have fixed chokes will be cheaper than those with choke tubes. So if you just want the gun for clays fixed chokes in skeet and skeet would be perfect. But if you find one say choked full and mod the chokes can be honed out to what ever you want for a fraction of the cost of converting to removable chokes.
The suggestion of a semi may be a consideration for her. Beretta comes to find, cheaper than a OU, soft recoil, and in a Beretta or Browning reliable. I would stay away from a Remington as you will need a box of parts and the knowledge to keep it operating on clay field.
It may take a little searching but I am sure you will find something appropriate for your wife.

I'm going to go against my own normal though process here, but qualify it with a question: how big is your wife?

My wife is 5' 7", 115lbs, and loves to shoot. Because of her size, even the smallest "off the self" guns we could find were too big, both length, weigh t(more due to balance), and grip diameters. We ended up getting her a Browning 625 Sporting and getting it fitted. The shop (S&S Plus in Polson) took ~1 1/2" off the LOP, installed a raised comb (~1/2") and rolled the comb to the right, it now shoots where she looks.

Find something used, and adjust it; it will likely need to be cut down anyways, and "massaged" into fitting her properly. If you cut the stock down too much, add spacers, you can build your own raised comb with bondo, or tape and foam, it may not look pretty, but you shoot better with a well fitting gun than with a pretty gun.

The brands discussed above are all good to look for (Browning, Beretta as the big ones), but to really have it work for her, it will more than likely take some reworking of the stock. So if you have access to a Stock Fitter, great, if not perhaps spend a bit less and make it less painful for you to modify it yourself.

Sapper33 is very correct, any of the lady shooters I every shot with had extensive stock work done in the area of LOP and comb height. Off the shelf stock dimensions rarely fit any women unless of course she is a bigger lady of a mans proportions. Very important that she has a gun that fits her or she is not going to happy and enjoy the sport which means you won't either.

My wife shoots Skeet and Trap with me and used a Beretta 391 20G. However, as she is 5'4", the gun didn`t fit too well so I got her a Browning Citori Micro Midas 20G and she is breaking a lot more clays and enjoying her shooting due to the gun fitting her better.

If you can try to stretch the budget for a Browning or Beretta. They are designed to last for 1000's and 1000's of rounds. The $1000 shotguns will need replacing after 3-4 years hard use.

Having been there and done that..... It's going to cost more than 1000.00 to get a gun a lady (unless she's built like a man) will enjoy shooting. You're going to have to get stock work done. Most likely an adjustable comb and butt plate. Depending on her size and shape, you may get away with just a slight adjustment, but I'd prepare for the upfront cost of everything.

They have longer necks, higher cheek bones.... And boobs (God bless em').... So, a gun built for a man ain't gonna fit.

As mentioned above, it is paramount that the gun fit her, or she won't shoot for long.

Cheap new O/Us will not stand up to the rigors of clay target shooting for very long. Look for a used Beretta or Browning in good condition. Keep in mind that a worn O/U can easily cost $800 to recondition. Many of them already have an adjustable comb and butt plate installed.
