Looking for barrel / gunsmith in Canada for my Tikka

You supply the barrel...
I have an excellent reamer for the 6.5x55... cuts a match quality chamber and factory ammo can be used.
Thread, chamber, crown, head space $275
Blast the barrel a matte finish $80

I don't know why you would waste money truing a large cartridge as a 6.5x55 and a Tikka action. I am sure a quality barrel will make it a fine shooter.

Thanks guntech, those are prices I can live with. Do you have a business I can look over?

I was under the impression that truing a Tikka was a fools errand. There are many tikkas on Snipers Hide shooting very tight groups with only a new barrel and reduced weight trigger spring, prefits in many cases as well. I have a pair of barrels from Insite that are absolute hammers, so I would recommend them but be aware you might be waiting a while.

In future my Tikkas (have three) will only be wearing prefits as there seems to be little practical difference in performance between a well-made prefit and chambered barrel.

Have you tried Tactical Ordnance, they are a site sponsor and are just north of Newmarket off Yonge St.

If accuracy is of utmost importance, then the two most important criteria is a top quality barrel and a top quality gunsmith. How a gunsmith cuts a chamber (technique, reamers, how sharp the reamer is, how the cutting chips are removed while chambering, equipment used, etc) makes a big difference in how a gun will shoot and "break in"/clean-up.

As a top notch gunsmith in the USA says, "putting anything but a top quality barrel in your precision rifle is like putting 7 pistons in a V8". Thankfully lots of great options these days. My general preference is go for the established brands with good track records: Krieger, Bartlein, Hawkhill, Brux, Benchmark, etc. I've had good success with all of the above.

Insite has done excellent work for me and is my gunsmith of choice in Canada.

I could be wrong but truing up a Tikka action is a waste of money. A Remington on the other hand yes spend that money.

I would agree. I don't think you are going to get much benefit out of it IMO, especially if Tikka is able to hold tolerances tight enough on their action specs that shouldered prefits can be built for them without the gunsmith seeing the action. Tikka must be doing something right.

IMO, that money would be much better spent on a top quality barrel blank and gunsmith. Skip the truing.

Another option is a Proof prefit. They make a lite contour shouldered prefits in 6.5x55 for Tikka's.

If it was me, I would have a gunsmith that I trusted to spin up the barrel. But if you want a barrel shipped to your house for a self install, and if it checks your boxes, then the Proof prefit is a good option. Proof makes good barrels. I can't speak to their chambering though.

let me add to this, if you are going to get a good barrel blank(kreiger-bartlein etc) remember to buy one with a 1.200 shank not a 1.250 because it would be larger than the action face of a tikka/sako!
