Anyone know someplace in Canada that carries the Lyman chamber checker or something similar? Just getting tired of stripping down a pistol to do the "plunk" test setting up the dies.

Any help appreciated.

There is only one pistol with the same chamber as yours. Keep plunking....

Once you know the OAL for a particular bullet, do you log it? Anytime you load that bullet, just set the OAL as per the log entry.

And if you keep using the same bullet, the die setting should not be changed.

I have several pistols with very, very short throats (Norinco and CZ) and some with much longer throats (Colt). Unless there is a big accuracy issue, I just load everything short.

Can you do that?

I agree with Ganderite.

The only people I know that plunk every round are the guys testing their competition rounds for IDPA/IPSC etc. and only some of them do it. A failure during practice is a good thing, it will keep you on your toes.

I'm not certain what calibre you're talking about, but the shock bottle is very popular for IPSC reloaders. 100 round chamber check and you can dump the rounds from the shock bottle into your plastic ammo case.
Fast Toys carries it in Canada. 9 / 40 / 45 / 38 super.

I like the shock bottle because it double (or triple) checks the cases for any cracks or bulges, so feeding and chambering isn't an issue. It's also a good check for making sure the primer is seated correctly, and the bullets are all seated at the correct depth. And well, I store my reloads in the plastic MTM cases, and it just goes from the shockbottle into the cases.

After having steel case gauges that can rust I started buying "individual" Dillon stainless steel case gauges for my pistols.

"Dillon Handgun Case Gauges

Dillon handgun case gauges allow you to check your handgun ammunition to ensure it will fit a minimum sized chamber. Made of stainless steel for long life."

Just remember that there are very few rifle case gauges that check case diameter.

Below the Wilson and Dillon case gauges "DO NOT" check case diameter and the JP Enterprise gauge does. As you can see with the .223 cases reversed they drop further into the Wilson and Dillon gauges. The JP Enterprise gauge is made with a finish chamber reamer and does check case diameter, and the other two only check headspace.

I think this is "why" they tell you the best plop test is in your own barrel, because so few gauges are cut to minimum SAAMI diameter.
