Hey everyone, I’m new to coyote hunting and looking for some help breaking down a couple public land spots. I hunted deer here this season, saw a coyote and lots of tracks. I’ve included maps and photos of each area with color-coded dots to show where each picture was taken. I’ve also added track photos to confirm ID.
AREA 1 – (Green, Red, Yellow) - Rifle or shotgun
Green: Cedars
• cedar cover with 40–60 yard sightlines max.
• Lots of tracks but no obvious trails theyre taking.
• some human traffic on trails but there are less trails here so its easier to get away from them.
Red: Hardwoods
• More open, some human traffic And trails
• I did see a coyote once cutting across the field to the south from my deer stand (out of bow range)
• Not much sign otherwise.
Yellow: Thicker mixed woods with walking trails
• More human and dog activity.
• Still seems to have consistent coyote tracks slightly off the main trails and following trails.
AREA 2 – (White, Blue)
White: Long cleared hydro cut
• Haven’t been here with snow on the ground to check for tracks
• Long sightlines, possible good area but shotgun only
Blue: Field edge with track sign
• Lots of something walking the perimeter.
• I put bait and a camera here to see what’s coming through.
• This area is shotgun and bow only, so I’d be set up close on the edge of the woods.
TRACK QUESTIONS
I included a close-up track photo and a straight line of tracks in the snow. Are these definitely coyote? Oval shape and the straight path and gate look like it from what I've seen.
MY PLAN
Right now I’m thinking:
• Keep bait at the blue spot (just inside woods in a slightly more open area with abiut 40 yard sightline to bair), see if the camera shows consistent times.
• Set up a few yards inside the woods with the wind blowing towards the open field
• i can also try calling setups in the hydro cut (shotgun only so no rifle) and the cedar area (rifle allowed)?
Any advice on how to hunt these areas more effectively would be appreciated especially for public land.
Thanks!
